Guest guest
Oh Joe I am so sorry is ill what a scary time. ended up with dehydration and in the ER for dehydration-it was scary. There is something called Swizzle which our DR gave us and was great- had blisters in his throat and couldn't swallow but we would give him a dose of this and it would coat his throat and then he was willing to take a bottle-he didn't take solid foods for over a week though and it was scary. Anyhow you can make it at home- I THINK it was equal parts of Benadryl and Maalox I believe DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THAT YET! You might want to ask your ped or pharmacist if this would be OK for you to use-and I will locate our bottle and verify the contents for you. But our ped called it swizzle stick there are a couple of different bed side remedy names but your ped will know what it is and it did wonders to help his sore throat while we waited for it to heal. My sisters ped gave it to her son when he had bronchitis to help coat his throat. As far as taking the pedialyte refused to drink it-our ped said to add Karo syrup to it and we tried that but he doesn't even drink fruit juice so he wasn't going for it. What we did do was buy the popsicle they have and gave him those and we froze the juice and made it into a slushy and spoon fed him that and it was helpful. To prevent dehydration try giving him a spoonful every 10 minutes for 2 hours and then increasing it to 2 teaspoons and so forth. It is tedious but it will do the trick-we had to use a dropper and force it into his cheek when you do that they have no choice but to swallow it cause they cant get it out. Also pudding jello applesauce and fruit have high water content so if you can get him to take that do so-it works to rehydrate. They have pedialyte Jello too. If he likes popsicles try those they feel good on the throat- wouldn't et the pedialyte pops but we gave him a cup of crushed ice and he enjoyed eating that and playing in it at the same time. Also a cold wet wash cloth it good would suck the water out of it-sounds gross but when you want them to get fluids I am willing to try anything. I hope this was helpful. Congrats on the insurance seems Aetna is coming around on the issue and that is great. Please keep us posted on your lads progress!
