Guest guest
Lynne, I don't really have any definitive answers to your questions, however, I can tell you what my neurosurgeon said and he has done extensive research on plagio - the causes and treatment. He said that knowing all that he knows about plagio that he would still sleep his children on their back and try to give them plenty of tummy time to play and other activities that would keep them off their back during waking hours. He says that there is undisputable evidence that the number of cases of deaths from SIDS has decreased dramatically since the Back to Sleep campaign. Knowing all that I know now I too will sleep any future children on their back, however, I know some other things to do the next time around to prevent the flat head. I would agree with Debbie, though, I would take the flatness ANYDAY over even the slightest chance of death from SIDS. Hopefully you will get the answers you are looking for regarding this issue. Good luck. Marci (Mom to ) Oklahoma
Guest guest
I for one would be extremely cautious using anything but back sleeping. You can prop them up in every position, head wise, while they sleep on their backs, or while you watch and they nap, on their little sides. Babies can't roll back over to their sides or backs if they just happen to get their little faces face down and they may sufficate. it's alot of work, but worth every effort. Just a thought. I used towels under their little shoulders, to prop them one side or the other, but they are still most of the way on their backs. My girl got plagio in utero, and it just never popped out, as they say. And of course, every dr/nurse I saw would say reposition her, and of course not offer anything to go along with it, just words, never and example, so I research via net and found all these wonderful people...lol. __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Lynne: Here are some links to some info on SIDS... http://www.aap.org/search/query.idq?CiScope=%2F & CiMaxRecordsPerPage=40 & TemplateName=query & CiSort=rank%5Bd%5D%2Cwrite%5Bd%5D & HTMLQueryForm=query.htm & freetext= & CiRestriction=SIDS Kendra does anyone know what research was done and #'s to this research Hi,Does anyone know the exact research that was done for AAP to start the "back to sleep" campaign? How have the numbers of SIDS cases been affected? How did they study this? Last I heard on SIDS they still don't know what causes it, has that changed? What was difference in numbers of SIDS cases between back sleep and side sleep? I know the coordinator I spoke with says they now have in their literature that you may do occasional side sleep, yet this isn't emphasized in their logo. Why have they now changed this, because too late they realize the error of their words and the damage it has done to so many children? How many group studies have they done to determine back sleep is best? Did they find during their research that it was causing plagio? If so, shouldn't this have been put in the literature from the start to warn parents and give them options? I for one would probably have listened to friends and family and put my children on their sides which is what they did without any problems. Please if any has this info. let me know. If not, hopefully coordinator of "back to sleep" will get back to me with a number for someone in research who will be able to answer these questions. As I said in a reply to A happycamp4, Keep in mind researchers can make mistakes. Growing up we all thought eating spinach would make you strong but it turned out researchers reported the WRONG numbers!
