second guessing decision AFTER casting

Hello all who have been through this,

Aileen (9 mos.) was casted on Mon. (horrible) and will be fitted Dec.

27. I am just distraught over if we made the right decision. I am

beside myself with worry. Did anyone go through this. Cranial tech

classified her as mod/severe right flatness. We never saw a

neurosurgeon. No one directed us to. Ped. said it was clearly plagio

and gave rx for the doc band. (previously had said it would round out

by 9 mos). Is anyone afraid we will later find out that the doc band

causes some other problems or delays or something? Her head has

improved alot with repositioning starting at 7 mos. but we felt if we

were going to band we had better do it now in the first year of

life. Improvement seemed to come to a standstill also. A friend of

the family works at our CT facility which is great. What a difficult

spot we are in . If we could only go back in time. Any words of

advice/wisdom would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Sheila in Chicago

Hi Shelia, please stop doing this to yourself. These bands work

and in the two years and thousands of posts I've read I've never

heard anything happening with brain damage from these. Our daughter

has the same degree of Plagio and severe tort. She still hit all her

milstones on time or early. The Plagio is a bummer I know and you

will feel alot better once your going for the re fittings and seeing

the changes. Were now along way past this but I feel I need to let

you know your doing the right thing and stop worring, the worst is

over(the casting) now its all downhill.

Sheila:

Please do not second guess yourself. You are definitely doing the

right thing. The DOCband has been around for years, there has never

been any evidence that the band causes any type of brain problems,

etc post treatment. There is however, reports of the side effects of

non treated plagio.

The casting is by far the most difficult part of the process. It is

very hard on the parents to see your dear child so upset. Please do

not doubt your decision. Especially if Aileen's plagio is moderate

to severe. If your repositioning came to a standstill as you said,

then I would say you're making the right decision. I cried & cried

after Abby was casted, I also wondered if I did the right thing. I

felt guilty & cruel putting my baby thru this. Well, Abby couldn't

have cared less. 10 mins after each casting, she was back to her

happy self. She is not developmentally behind in any way, she

graduated in June, also from the Chicago CT (they're wonderful there).

If there ever was any evidence of developmental delays while wearing

the band, I'm sure they wouldn't be FDA approved and you would

definitely have heard about it.

Keep your chin up - Aileen has great parents who are doing everything

within their power to assure a rounder head for her!!!!!!!!!!! And

again, the hard part is over, the casting is the worst of this

process.

Good luck.

Sheila,

Its only normal to second guess everything we do as parents,

especially something major. I can assure you that you are doing the

right thing. The DOCband is a wonderful product and has tons of

research done on it. Wearing the band will not have any adverse

effects on your child, if there was the slightest suspiscion that it

would, I doubt it would have been given an FDA approval. I have been

here almost a year now and it seems that a childs development

improves after wearing the band. Whether its a coincidence or not, I

don't know, but a lot of parents have noticed that their child will

finally sit up, or starts crawling. I really don't think you have

anything to worry about in regards to milestones. The casting

process is very daunting, I wanted to take my babies and run away,

but it was over really quick. It was very reassuring to know that

the casting was the most difficult part, and we survived it! In fact

we survived the duration of the treatment, and you will too. It just

takes time getting used to the idea. Take care and good luck to you,

let us know what you decide.
