Guest guest
Hello all, We went to the orthotist today to get some more measurements of Logan's head for our insurance co. to approve the band. Hopefully the STARband will be in next week. I have a question ? I asked what Logans measurements were and he told us well over 20mm. I'm just confused b/z when he first saw us he told us Logan was definitely not severe plagio and to look at him he doesn't appear to be. I asked our ortho what perimeters to shoot for as far as correction. He told us that he really doesn't go by that. He said the most correction he's ever seen is 5/8ths of an inch but most are the 1/2 inch range. He said the main focus when a child comes to him is that they don't have other problems such as TMJ,vision problems ,etc.and that each childs correction is individualized. Which makes sense and of course our main focus is that Logan stays healthy. But doesn't 20mm sound a lot? I know our ortho is experienced . I've spoken to a oouple of moms about him including Marci. I'm sorry this is long but I'm starting to get nervous about this. Any thoughts? Sara(Logan's mom)
Guest guest
Sara, I would suggest calling Bill back and asking him to tell you exactly what he means by 20mm off. I'm sure Bill gave us some measurements when we were in, but to tell you the truth I couldn't tell you anything about that part. Bill will be the first to tell you that those measurements are very subjective. There is no way to get a real accurate measurement at the end to compare because the headshape will have changed so much that there is no way to " norm " the meaurements. If Logan's ears don't look far off as you view them from the top I would not worry. If you need more explanation from Bill I'm sure he would be very happy to explain further. Give him a call - he is very accessible by phone. If he can't speak to you at the moment he will definitely call you back. Again, I truly wouldn't worry too much about the subjective measurements - I agree that the way your baby looks is more significant. Guest guest
Sara: I'm sorry, I really can't offer much input. I'm not familiar at all with the measurements orthotists take. Abby wore both a STARband and a DOCband but neither took any measurements of her head. There are so many different measurements each child has. If you've heard good things about your orthotist, then trust what you've heard. If you're still worried, continue asking him questions. Don't feel silly about it, you have every right to know what he's done in the past with the bands. Don't ever hesitate to get his history. Guest guest
Hey Sara I am sure that your ortho is great and maybe you don't want to vest too much in the numbers. Our ortho or neuro didn't give one ounce of concern to measurements and we had great results. I was concerned too wondering why but I think once they do this long enough the numbers aren't the issue. Now maybe for your insurance they will be-but I am sure things will be fine. Good luck and keep usposted! Beck
