Guest guest Posted October 7, 2003 Report Share Posted October 7, 2003 Instead of Ravan, they burnt AIDS demon Express News Service Surat, October 5: WHILE effigies of Ravan were burnt at several places on the occasion of Dusherra, the Nurses' Union of the New Civil Hospital celebrated Dusherra in a unique way by burning the effigy of Ravan representing `AIDS and Addiction' on Sunday. The programme of the Nurses' Union was organised to spread the message among the people that Ravan was the enemy of Lord Ram while AIDS and Addiction are enemies of the human race. Vice-president of the All India Trained Nurses' Association, Iqbal Kadiwala said, ``On Dusherra the demons were defeated. We have grabbed this opportunity to spread a message among the people that Ravan was the enemy of Lord Ram while AIDS and Addiction are the enemies of the entire human race. We burnt the effigy of Ravan representative of AIDS and Addiction to celebrate this festival.'' Nurses affiliated to the Association, Head of Surat Medical College Dr Shailendra Vajpayee, in-charge Superintendent of the New Civil Hospital M K Wadhel and other doctors remained present at the programme. Praveen Prajapati, president of the New Civil Nurses Union said, ``This is the first time that we have organised such a programme. People at several places burnt the effigies of Ravan to mark the victory of Lord Ram over the demons, but we burnt the effigy of AIDS and Addiction that has spread havoc in society.'' Prajapati added, ``Scores of people are killed every year due to AIDS and due to tobacco addiction across the country.
