Guest guest
Hi all-- Ok I have been feeling pretty good about our decision to put Grace in the helmet and she has been doing really well in the week and 2 days that she has been in it. I read the post about the poorly fitting helmet and now I am wondering how do I know if it is poorly fitting??? I just assume that it is doing what it is supposed to do? Who exactly do you go to, to make sure that your orthotist is doing a good job and has made the helmet to correct your childs plagio? Is this something that the neurosurgeon will help with. Because we don't have an appt with him until Jan 31 and meanwhile we have her wearing the helmet. My other two questions are: Our ped. wants us to go and see the neurosurgeon for a consult for possible insurance payment. What is the difference between a neurologist and a neurosurgeon...is there one? And my second question is that Grace had her 4 month check and shots on Thurs and she has been running a slight temp and with the helmet on it was not helping her with her overheating. She was really upset and when I took her pajamas off and her helmet and she cooled down she was feeling better. I know that this is only temp but what have other people done with temps and the helmets? I put it back on her to sleep but I worry about overheating. Ok thanks and Grace
Guest guest
Hi , My Abby is in the STARband which my orthotist calls a helmet. I believe you would probably know if the helmet didn't fit properly because it would be moving around a lot and making Grace miserable. I wouldn't worry about it unless you see something you know isn't right or if your orthotist dismisses you and doesn't take the time to address your concerns. Abby has been in the STARband since Christmas and we have already seen a big difference. We see the neurologist on Monday, so I'm excited to hear her new measurements. The info I have is that you are not supposed to leave the helmet on if the child has a fever--my doc considers anything over 100.1 to be a fever. I was worried about this also because two days into wearing the helmet, Abby got a fever of 104 so we had to start the therapy over a few days later. From the advice I've gotten on this board, we're also supposed to dress them a little cooler to make up for the heat of the helmet. Hope this helps. Guest guest
: I'm trying to find you a definition on the neurologist vs. neurosurgeon question, I'll post it as soon as I can find one. If Grace's temp is over 100 deg. then I would suggest keeping the helmet off. That's what I was told to do with both Abby's bands. How do you know if the helmet is fitting properly? That's a tough one. I suggest seeing your neuro and asking him at yuor appt later this month. If you don't see any improvment in a month, then I would question the orthotist. If you are real uneasy about it, then ask to be seen by a different orthotist at the hospital. Just for peace of mind, it's always nice to get a 2nd opinion that things are being done properly. Take weekly pictures of Grace's head, from every angle, and make sure the changes are occuring in the right areas of her head. Make sure Grace doesn't have any bad red spots that do not go away w/i the one hour off time frame. Hope this helps!
