So, it's summer. Time for pigging out at the family BBQ, right? NOOOOOOO!

OK folks, this one's going to hit us all sooner or later this summer in all

likelyhood, be it a

company picnic, a neighborhood get-together or a family renunion. NOW is the

time to

think about how we're going to handle the situation - not later when it's too

late and the

food's finding its way onto our plates!

My solution? Bring the veggies!

I'm going to a friend's house tomorrow and he's going to grill sirloins - I'm

bringing the

sides. BIG salad. And boy, those portabella mushrooms I bought are SURE to be

wonderful

on the grill. And that luscious looking eggplant? I bet it'll be just as nice

grilled as it would

be smothered in breading, sauce and mozarella! Oh... and what about those

zucchini? And

the onions?

Yep. I plan on having ONE small serving of meat, and filling my plate with tasty

veggies.

Now, luckily my friends are understanding of my status as a diabetic, and there

won't be

too many tempting desserts, and I know they're going to use a sugar-free rub for

the

meat. If there were desserts to be had I know this would be more difficult.

My really tough family gathering is going to be Father's Day. We always go to

visit my

Grandpa, and he eats out at Golden Corral (southern-fried-everything buffet)

EVERY

Saturday. So, definitely going to have to be making some choices there... Maybe

I'll order

off the menu instead of getting the buffet. Or, maybe I'll just have a planned

" excursion " -

eat light the rest of the day, make sure I get some exercise in, and make the

best of it with

a little extra insulin.

The grilled veggies sound good.

Tomorrow we're going to a BBQ to honor the police at a nearby town. My mom

is president of the citizens' police group so she invited us. They are

going to have 3 kinds of meat and the usual sides. It's catered so I can't

grill veggies. I plan to take a cooler with water or decaf iced tea so I'll

have something healthy to drink. My mom is bringing styrofoam take out

boxes for the dispatchers and those that can't come to the picnic. She said

I could snag a box for my leftovers. I haven't had BBQ since surgery.

My mom is a trip. She's 77 and she went through the citizens' police

academy a couple of years ago. She was the best shot with a 45 and got the

Top Gun award. :) She drives around in a police Suburban and puts warnings

on windshields of people parked in handicapped spots. She just started

inventorying evidence too. She's handled drug paraphrenalia, cash, guns,

etc. They only let the real cops inventory the drugs. :) I'm glad she

stays active. She will be doing lots of kid duty this summer since I'll be

going back to work.

Wow. What a trip!

I'm having flashbacks tot he Police Academy movie though with the " Citizens On

Patrol " :)

Just out of curiosity, is she paid, or is it volunteer? With as strained as our

police forces

are, it sounds like something every community could use!
