Guest guest Posted June 10, 2006 Report Share Posted June 10, 2006 's Daily Message Saturday June 10, 2006 HARD, REAL HARD Yesterday I chatted with you about the amazing, special needs kids that came to my Sweatin` class at Slimmons. I told you how well they did and what an inspiration they were to me and should be to you. Many of the children that came have cerebral palsy, autism, and other challenges. Many moons ago, I wrote a book called " Reach for Fitness, " and I also did a video working with children with many different challenges. I worked with a lot of kids all over the United States, and I taught classes in support of my project to get all kids doing some kind of movement. When I was on " General Hospital, " I was spokesperson for spina bifida for 3 years. No matter what city I went to, there were children with spina bifida in the audience who came to work out with me. What I have learned about kids with challenges is that they really try hard, real hard. When you do a leg lift, the command comes from your brain, which then tells your legs to lift. A lot of these kids command their brains to do things, but sometimes their legs and arms don`t cooperate. I watched them in class really concentrate to do even the slightest move. There were a few kids in wheelchairs, and you should have seen them go! I was told later that they worked out to my " Sit Tight " video. As I watching everyone have fun, I had a thought that rather disturbed me. As a kid, I didn`t do anything, and I mean any physical activity. I was a chair, bed, and couch potato. I was sick to think that I wasted all those years to sheer laziness and lack of motivation. I had no respect for my body. At that moment, I felt such shame. I was ashamed I did nothing to take care of my health. Are you taking care of your health? I know many of you have challenges, too, but are you forging ahead and working hard, real hard like the kids who came to my class? I believe many of you reading this have become lazy about taking care of your body. I want you to change your way of thinking and start exercising as best you can!
