Hey -shouldn't kids come with a tell all instruction manual- I hate

not being able to figure stuff out. If your son has a temp-and it is above 99

I would take it off. When had his helmet he was prone to really high

temps and so we always had the helmet off at first site of an elevation-but

99 is no big deal above that remove it until the temp resolves itself. As far

as the ear thing-is it possible that he has grown enough that it is time to

shave some of the ear away so that the helmet is not touching his ear at all?

Or maybe is his hair pushed forward toward the ear and itching and that is

why he is tugging at it? of courseif he is getting another cold- his ears

could just be clogged and that is why he is pulling at it- makes habit

of pulling at his ears when he is tired and that started at about 7 months so

it may just be a sign that he doesn't feel well and not necessarily related

to the ear at all. Keep an eye on him if the cold is progressing maybe he

just needs something to unclog his little head. I hope he feels better soon.

Let is know how you make out!

My Granddaughter has been in a Helmet for 1 month. We have noticed she keeps

grabbing at her Right Ear. I have often wondered why. She doesn't have an

Ear infection or Cold.

I haven't had her sick in the Helmet so I don't know what I would do? Maybe

ask the Doc. if I could please take it off until the temp. lowers.

It was interesting to read about your Child also does this. I wonder if it

has something to do with the Helmets pushing certain nerves?

The tugging at the ears, accompanied by the runny nose, sounds like he could

have another ear infection. Ear infections are not always accompanied by

fevers, and sometimes the fevers they get can come and go, so you may not

have noticed it. I'd recommend taking him to the doctor to have his ears

checked out. And yes, if he has a fever, take the helmet off.

Helmets & Tugging at ears/Colds

Hi,

My son has been in his helmet now for 3 1/2 months. The past month

and a half he always sticks his fingers in his ears when we take the

helmet off. He was sick about a month ago and had a fever so we took

him to the doctor, it turned out he had an ear infection. We gave

him antibiotics and it seemed to clear up. I thought the reason he

was tugging at his ears was due to the ear infection rather than the

helmet. Just yesterday, he had a runny nose and seems to be getting

another cold and is tugging at his helmet and his ears. I took his

temperature and it was normal so I don't think he has an infection.

I'm a first time mom and am not sure what the problem might be. Does

anyone have any advice or input? My other question is what do you do

when your child has a temperature..do you take the helmet off?

Please respond with any information. Thank you

If it's not an ear infection, imake sure the ears are not being "rubbed" by the helmet.....sometimes this can be bothersome- we had to have the area around ' ear cut out as he grew (his ear came up!) so that it would not rub him.

You should remove the helmet if your child has a fever and leave it off until

the fever is gone. My daughter had severe and chronic ear infections. If she

has snot, she had an ear infection - period. She rarely had a fever with her

ear infections, so even if he does not have a fever he could still have an

ear infection. It probably wouldn't hurt to have it checked out.

Good luck and let us know how your son is doing.

My son also tugs at his ears quite frequently. When he first started to do it, we thought he had an ear infection. We took him to the peds. and he did not have one -- neither ped. (they are a husband and wife team) could give us an explaination as to why he was doing it. We, too, thought maybe his hair was tickling his ears (at the time, he needed a hair cut -- badly!) Well, he had his first haircut a couple of weeks ago, and he still plays around with his ears!! I thought maybe was the only one doing such a thing -- but this is weird huh?!

just got over being sick this past weekend. He had a fever, runny nose, cough, very tired, not eating or drinking etc. Thank goodness NO ear infection!! Anyway, we took his helmet off from Sunday until last night. He is feeling better today and is back at daycare. (His orthotist instructed us to remove it when he got sick, esp. if he had a fever). When we did put it back on yesterday evening -- he was trying to push it off at first -- (I felt soooo bad for him!!!) I distracted him with one of his favorite toys and then he forgot all about it!!!!!!
