Hi everyone,

Like everyone else, my son has torticollis and positional plagio.

We first noticed his head flattening at 3 weeks but his dr. told us

not to worry about it. Being first time parents we didn't know any

better:( At 2 months I realized that his head was getting worse and

demanded a referral to a ped. It's been several months of

repositioning and OT and his head is still misshapen. However, his

ears have actually started to realign. We are not sure if this

means the repositioning is working or if we should consider getting

the helmet given he is almost 6 months old. Does anyone have a

similar story? Advice?

Thanks

Dana

It does sound like you have been getting somewhere with repositioning!! That's great! :o)

Whether or not you should switch over to a helmet will be a big decision for you to make. If you feel you have had really good success with repositioning, and you feel it will continue, then by all means continue with it. On the flip side of that, your son is getting older by the day, and you may find the repositioning becomes difficult or impossible in the weeks and months to come. But consider too that when he starts to sit on his own, you MAY see some improvement at that time as well (although many (not all!) of us could say that sitting up had no effect on head shape).

It's all so confusing!! No one can know what will happen with each individual situation. Each baby and each case is different from the next, and there's no way to look ahead to see if it will all work out on it's own.

I wish you luck with your decision! Please keep us posted as to what you decide to do.

Hi Dana:

Welcome to our group!! It is hard for any of us to say if your son

might need a helmet or not. Have you been referred to a pediatric

neurosurgeon yet? A ped. neuro could offer valuable input as to your

son's headshape and ears. It sounds like you've seen some success

with repositioning which is great! At 6 mos your son is probably

able to sit up a bit now and sit in his exesaucer which will mean

less time on his head. How is his tort coming along? Deciding

whether or not to get a helmet for your son is very difficult. You

might want to wait & see if repositioning will help (which it has

some parents) but then you also don't want to wait until your son is

older to begin helmet treatment (the younger you begin, the better

the correction often is).

Do you have any pictures you could email us of your son's headshape

and/or ears? We'd love to see the cutie! Welcome again.
