There are many parents who started therapy later and did not get 100% correction with their lovies heads-and I am sure canshare their experience in relation to your Trevor's experience. I would say that if you're concerned about the side effects that his head shape may have than you might want to see a pediatric neurosurgeon who has experience with plagio and or a cranial facial specialist in regard to the same. They may be able to do a better evaluation of your son's head shape and determine if they feel there will be any side effects-depending on the severity of his head shape at this point. When your diagnosed did you have CT scans or x rays to rule out craniostynosis? What type of helmet therapy did your son receive and what did they feel the correction would be. It is my understanding that at this age the only option would be surgical intervention but I really believe that would depend on the severity and a neuro surgeon could best help you with that I am sure. Here is a link to finding a DR in your area that is familiar with plagio-best ofluck to you and please keep us posted.

Hi,

My son Austin is 5 yrs old with untreated plagio. I know every child is different, but in my experience Austin has had absolutely no physical or health problems. Please feel free to look at his pics in his album on the photo page. Just to let you know, he did see a specialist at 8 months and had a cat scan. A band was never mentioned nor repostioning techiniques. I would have to say that if we had known about the band, we probobly would have pursued it.

And... we never even knew it was called "plagiocephaly" until a few months ago when i found this group when searching for info about "flattened head". This group is great, glad you found it.

Trevor, almost 3 yrs. old

I would be interested to talk to anyone else in my predicament. My son Trevor, was diagnosed with positional plagiocephaly at 13 months old (even though I brought it to my pediatrician's attention at 4, 6 and 9 months old) and went into a molding helmet at 14 months and wore it until 19 months. At that time, Trevor's plagiocephaly was partially corrected but now at almost 3 yrs. old, his head is still misshapen. My question is this. Is there anything that can be done at this point? I'm concerned that Trevor might have physical problems that stem from this such as migraines and TMJ. Can anyone enlighten me on this? Or if you have had a similiar experience, did you take your child to a neurosurgeon? Any information would be greatly appreciated. For more plagio info

Kathy,

I just posted a message to the board again but realized that it might be better to just email you. I just looked at the pictures of your son Austin. He is so adorable and he really looks great! If I didn't know about Plagio I wouldn't see anything different about him. His plagio looks very similiar (flattening on same side) to Trevors although Trevors might be a little more severe. I couldn't tell by the pictures, are Austin's ears misaligned? Trevor has one ear a little forward on one side of his head. My question is this. Did you notice that his head shape got better as he got older? I will try to send you some pictures of Trevor. I also mentioned on the posting board that my 5 month old son Tucker was also diagnosed with plagio and he is now in a molding helmet and has been for almost two months. His head is almost completely corrected hence my frustration with my first pediatrician who kept telling me that Trevor's head shape would "work itself out". I'm so happy to have found someone with an older child with plagio. Any information would be most helpful. Thanks! Lori

Hello and welcome. Sorry to hear that your ped didn't take you seriously

until your son was 13 months. Unfortunately that is all too common around

this group! It is true that many specialists believe (not all of them) that

untreated plagio can lead to all sorts of trouble including the things you

mentioned. At almost 3 years of age, only invasive treatment remains and that

is neurosurgery. Have you seen a specialist who could verify what problems

might be occurring with Trevor due to the plagio? That would be my

suggestion. You should try consulting with a neurologist or neurosurgeon and

see what their advice would be. Perhaps a CT scan could indicate whether or

not there is pressure being created by the flatness or issues with the jaw.

My stepson is now 6 years old. I never noticed until recently that his head

has some slight flatness and that he has some minor facial asymmetry. He has

no medical side effects whatsoever. The only issue we've had is his bike

helmet fits kinda of funny, but it does fit!

Good luck to you as you pursure this. I can only imagine how frustrating this

must be for you.
