Guest guest
I would be interested to talk to anyone else in my predicament. My son Trevor, was diagnosed with positional plagiocephaly at 13 months old (even though I brought it to my pediatrician's attention at 4, 6 and 9 months old) and went into a molding helmet at 14 months and wore it until 19 months. At that time, Trevor's plagiocephaly was partially corrected but now at almost 3 yrs. old, his head is still misshapen. My question is this. Is there anything that can be done at this point? I'm concerned that Trevor might have physical problems that stem from this such as migraines and TMJ. Can anyone enlighten me on this? Or if you have had a similiar experience, did you take your child to a neurosurgeon? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Guest guest
Hi Lori: I see you've met our other group member who also has an older son with plagio. My daughter who is almost 2 wore a band for 4.5 mos, began at 11.5 mos age. She rec'd good correction, but her head is still somewhat misshapen. Many of us in this group have not rec'd that 100% correction. After the child's sutures are closed (usually by age 2) the only way to correct plagio is thru surgery. I would suggest you get an appt with a pediatric neurosurgeon who could offer some helpful insight to Trevor's severity as well as any possible side effects to the plagio. He sounds like a smart boy. Trevor is the name I want to name a boy IF I ever have another child (a big IF, hehe). I look forward to seeing some pictures of the cutie. Please be sure you keep us updated on Trevor. Guest guest
Debbie, Thanks for your advice. I have posted a picture of Trevor with his younger brother Tucker on the site so take a look. I feel like we did get correction with the helmet but probably only 50-60% of what his head condition was and it's the "birds eye" view that bothers me the most. When he was diagnosed with plagio he did see a neurologist and get a CAT scan and everything was fine and his sutures were still open. My 5 month old is in a helmet now and his plagio is almost entirely corrected. His head was flattening on the same side as Trevors so I caught it early with him. I think that I will take Trevor to see the neurologist again to just make sure that everything is okay physically...that is what I am concerned with the most, not that it is a little misshaped. I am trying to send a new picture of Trevor's head from above, so keep an eye out for it. Thanks! Guest guest
Debbie, We got Trevor and Tucker's helmets at the Prosthetics & Orthotics department at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor so that would probably be a couple of hours for you? I live in Troy so it's about 45 minutes for me. I am very pleased with Tucker's progress and hopefully he will only have to wear his a couple more months. Thanks for checking out the pictures. I am so happy that I found this site and all of these great moms who are going through what I'm going through...it's just so nice. Good luck! Lori in Michigan mom to Tucker & Trevor Re: Trevor, almost 3 yrs. old Lori:Again, lost a reply I sent to you like 8 hrs ago, so I'll reply again. I looked at Trevor & Tucker's pictures. What a couple of cuties. I can definitely tell they're related, very cute. I plan on taking my Abby to her neuro again sometime this year. She'll be 2 in one month, he wanted to see her again sometime after her 2nd bday. So I think it's a great idea to be safe to bring Trevor the a neuro, just to get a good eval & get some of your questions answered. It sounds like your other son is doing very well in his helmet. Is it a locally made helmet? I'm also in Michigan, we live in the Grand Rapids area - anywhere near you? What beautiful weather we're having huh? Abby & I were outside most of the day. Mid 50's & pure sunshine! Strange but I'll take it .Debbie Abby's mom DOCgradMI> Debbie,> > Thanks for your advice.
