Guest guest
Hi Mel: Welcome to the group. You have come to the right place for information and support - we truly do understand what you are going through. It's hard to say with RA just what kind of progression your disease will take. Everyone is different. We all have flares when the RA becomes more agressive - at that time we will have flu-like symptoms, fatigue, aching in our joints, warmth and swelling in the joints at times, and just generally feel sick. There is no way to foretell how bad your flares will be or how often you will have them, just that it is a part of the disease TO have them. Is your doctor a rheumatologist? With offering you steroids and anti-inflammatories, and with the diagnosis of RA, he should also offer you a DMARD which is a disease modifing drug such as Plaquenil or Methotrexate, and there are others. These drugs are very important in the fight against the progression of the disease, and you need to be aggressive in treatment from the first. You certainly have the right to decide what or what not to take, and there are drugs with less side effects than others. Also, it sometimes takes a while to find the right meds or combo of meds so that you feel better, so be patient. When I was first dx with RA 6 years ago, I read everything I could find on the internet about the disease. My grandmother had it, and I always thought it was " just joints, just arthritis " . I was amazed at what I found out about RA, and to be in this group has been immensely helpful as well. I am sure that or a (our moderators) can point you in the direction of helpful websites, or just surf like I did. There are also books available on RA. It must be hard right now to be in pain and be pretty much of a single parent much of the time. That's a very active age for a child lol. Hopefully when you husband is home, you are able to rest more. I hope this has helped you - let me know if you have any more questions - Kathe in CA --- <pmwheeler@...> wrote: > hi guys > i've been provisionally diagnosed with ra (have to > have more tests > again in 6-8 weeks) and i am really scared. > i knew that i wasn't right as my fingers have been > really aching (as > have my legs and hips) and they're swollen > my doc wanted to put me on antiinflammatories and > steroids but was > ok when i said i didn't really want to start taking > them as yet > i am in pain at night but i thought it was due to an > old back injury > with referred pain, now i think it is due to the > arthritis. my hips > hurt to lie on and my feet can't lie on each other > > just a couple of q's > does this disease flare up? ie, will it be this bad > (i know that > it's not that bad comparitively) or will it receede > > are there any websites that are good to visit? > > thanks guys > i am just shellshocked at the moment > mel > ps i am 34 with a 4.5 year old son and a wonderful > hubby who > unfortunantly lives away from us during the week > > > > > Kathe in CA __________________________________________________
