Guest guest
: It can be a bit confusing! Many orthotists out there handle the STARband, but it would likely be up to you to call around your area to find out who. Call local hospitals and such. You could also tell us what area you're in. Perhaps someone living close to you will pipe in and tell you of their experiences. If you'd like to compare the DOCBand & STARband "side by side", please check out this website... www.plagiocephaly.org/support/compare.htm. Guest guest
, Check out www.plagiocephaly.org/support - there is a link there that has a comparison chart for the different bands. Orthomerica " contracts " with local orthotists to make the STARband. Some of these orthos make other orthotic products besides the helmet. A physical therapist would definitely not be the one to call. You would need to speak to some local orthotists to get information about who makes the STARband in your area. Where in MI are you located? Perhaps one of our members is in the same area and can reccommend a local ortho. If you opt for the STARband you will need/want to interview your ortho before starting treatment. You need to see how much experience he/she has had with the band and what kind of results he/she gets. Ask for references and ask to see before/after pictures of babies he/she has treated. Ask what kind of training and experience he/she has with plagiocephaly and treating infants. If the ortho does not have extensive experience or seems unwilling to share references and photos I would think twice about receiving treatment from him/her. The two hour drive to the DOCband clinic would be long, but worth it if you can't find any skilled and experienced orthos in your area. Good luck and let us know what you decide!! Guest guest
Re: Doc Band vs. Star Band Hi Marci, I think I'm just going to drive the 2 hours and get the Doc Band. After checking out the side by side comparison on the plagio.org board I think I just feel more comfortable with it. I don't want to offend any one on the board who uses the Star Band, I'm sure there are some very good orthotists out there working with them. I just don't like the idea of having to do so much checking into the person to make sure he/she is experienced and has had success with the Star Band. I don't want to be doubting my decision. This whole process is already stressful enough for me, without having to wonder if my orthotists is as good as I think. The extra time on the road and extra cost ( if insurance doesn't pay) is worth it for me. I feel like if I'm going to put my baby through this, I want to be sure we're doing it right. Again, I'm not trying to critize anyone who is using the Starband. I admire you for taking the time to do the research, and interviews and find a othrotist who you feel comfortable. I just don't have the energy for it. I'll guess I will ask though, just in case, if anybody does know of a really good orthotists near me. I am in between Toledo, OH and Detroit, MI. I am also not far from Ann Arbor MI. If someone near me has gotten really good results then I might consider the Star Band. Guest guest
Hi , I just wanted to let you know that my son is wearing a STARband right now. We are extremely pleased with the results thus far. He has gotten approx. 90% correction (he had mild plagio) and he will be graduated in 2 mos. He was banded on 08/22/01 when he was 7 mos. His orthotist, Terry, (who we absolutely love!) wants him to be in the band until he is 14 mos. old. ( turned 1 yr. on Jan. 25th and he has had no problem wearing his helmet.) The nearest DOC band clinic for us (we are 1 hr. east of Pittsburgh) was in Ohio. It would have been a several hour drive. So we opted for the STARband. We went through Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, they in turn sent us to Union Orthotics and Prosthetics also in Pittsburgh. Everyone at Union has went out of their way for us. We are extremely pleased with the care has received -- his orthotist has done many STAR castings and is very up-to-date with the helmet therapy. He travels quite frequently to Orlando to Orthomerica for seminars on the STARband therapy. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that the STARband therapy, in my opinion, is very effective. Goodluck with whatever you choose!!!!!!!!! Keep us posted! AnnMarie & (1 yr.) STARbanded -- 08/22/01 Re: Doc Band vs. Star Band : It can be a bit confusing! Guest guest
: I just wanted to pipe in regarding the Ohio DOC Band location. I near Cleveland but had to travel to Chicago for my son's DOC band because the Ohio location wasn't open in 2000. The flights were well worth the end result. Now that there is a clinic in my own back yard, I have talked to many moms who went/are going there for bands. All are pleased with the results. Actually, a good friend just told me the other night that her son had graduated. What was the only thing she would have done different??? Start treatment earlier. FYI...Mayfield is on the southeast side of Cleveland. Karmel Ross, the physical therapist, is well regarded for her work with children with torticollis. Hope you find all of the information to make the best decision for your family.
