Guest guest
Hi to everyone in the group. I'm new to the group so please bear with me if this is a bit off topic. My wife and I are new parents to a gorgeous 8 month old baby girl. However over the months we have noticed that she has developed a " flat head " on her right side. I now know this could be plagiocephaly however its is nearly impossible to have this diagnosed in the the UK let alone have it treated effectively. Unfortunately its still seen as something which will resolve itself over time. At least thats how all the doctors we have seen in the UK have diagnosed it. Being new parents we are becoming increasingly worried about this and our aim is now to bring her to the US to see a specialist there and if need be have a band fitted. Our trouble is we don't know which hospital or specialist to see. We will have to fly over from the UK so we can really go anywhere in the US. Does anyone have any recommendations of who is a good specialist and/or hospital in the US? Our insurance will not cover this so I will be paying for this myself but for my little girl I'll do anything to get her right. Any help would be really appreciated. Guest guest
Hi Nick, I cannot really answer where or who works best as my experience is only with Children's hospital in Boston, MA. They make a locally made helmet (that looks similar to the bands- open on top with air holes around the sides). Everyone we have worked with has been excellent and we have seen some great results in the 7 weeks our son has worn it. Our insurance covered most of the cost, for which we are fortunate, but I believe it runs in the $700- 800 dollar range as it's locally made so the cost is much less. We go through the NOPCO clinic at Children's (National Orthotics & Porsthetics Company), and their number is (617) 355-6887 if you wanted to contact them directly for more information. The neuro we saw for the diagnosis (about a 10 minute appt.) was also at Children's, Dr. Madsen. Through this site I have learned so much about helmets/DOC & STAR bands, etc. and I think that every situation is different. If we had not seen some results at this point, we probably would have looked into switching to the DOC band. However, we saw results within a week and feel VERY comfortable with our Ortho, he has been very straight forward and is just wonderful with our son. This group is such a great resource and will undoubtedly provide you with some great information. Where you are in a position to go anywhere, it might work well to contact individual places as well. Seattle Children's Hospital sounds like they do a great job, along with Cranial Tech sites which are all over the country. There have been a couple of other parents in this group from the UK, so hopefully you will hear from them as well. Good luck, I admire your determination to help your child. ~, ryan's mom Massachusetts Desparate new parents in the UK Hi to everyone in the group.
