Make sure you use something that can hold liquid, the crystals melt

when warm.

My wife uses the menthol crystals with the coffee cup warmer in her

car a couple times a week to keep the car mite free. As a added bonus,

the longer you do this, the more it saturates the fabric and carpet.

It's also a good option for those of us that live where it gets cold.

> Description: FIELD OF THE INVENTION

> [0001] This invention pertains to a method for killing house dust mites

> in soft materials such as clothing.

> BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

> [0002] It has been known for many years that common house dust is an

> important cause of asthma, rhinitis and eczema in allergic individuals.

> The mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and related mites are the

> major sources of house dust allergen in temperate climates including the

> United States. Dust mites are eight-legged arachnids, relatives of

> spiders. They live in close association with humans, their main food

> source being the shed scales from skin. A major protein allergen present

> in the fecal particles of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Der p I,

> can cause acute asthma symptoms when present at levels greater than

> 10μg per gram of dust.

>

> [0003] Dust mites are photophobic, and live within soft materials such

> as pillows, mattresses, blankets and clothing. One study revealed 20,000

> live dust mites in a jacket. Another study showed mean Der p I levels

> of 15.9 μg/gm in all clothing and 21.0 μg/gm in woolen garments.

> Hot water washing, dry cleaning, freezing and prolonged sun exposure can

> kill mites in fabrics. These methods are not practical for all fabrics,

> or may not be practical to do frequently.

>

> [0004] Since mites are not insects and are not even closely related to

> insects, it is not surprising that many insecticides do not kill mites.

> Chemical miticides exist which can kill some types of mites, but most of

> these have been developed for agricultural use, to kill plant-eating

> mites which infest growing crops or stored grain, and which constitute

> different mite species. Use of a chemical substance indoors, and

> particularly on clothing or carpeting in close contact with the user,

> obviously requires that the chemical be safe and pleasant.

>

> [0005] Despite advances in treatment, morbidity, mortality and costs

> related to asthma and other allergic diseases continue to rise. Since

> house dust mites are a major cause of these conditions, there is a need

> in the art for a safe and effective way of killing mites in clothing and

> other fabrics.

> SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

> [0006] The present inventor has found, surprisingly, that exposing

> woolen or other fabrics to the vapors of certain pleasant-smelling plant

> oils, including wintergreen oil, lavandin oil, Ylang-Ylang oil, and

> others, kills house dust mites in those fabrics.

>

> [0007] In one aspect of the present invention, a method for killing

> house dust mites which are living in or infesting a fabric substrate is

> disclosed. The method includes the step of exposing said mite-infested

> substrate to a vapor of at least one plant oil. The plant oil may be

> selected from the group of Anise, Balsam, Basil, Bay, Birch, Cajeput,

> Camphor, Caraway, Cinnamon, Clove, Coriander, Dill, Fennell, Fir,

> Garlic, Lavender, Lavendin, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Nutmeg, Peppermint,

> Pine, Rosemary, Rue, Sage, Spearmint, Tea Tree, Thuja, Thyme,

> Wintergreen and Ylang-Ylang.

>

> [0008] In a preferred method, the exposing step comprises placing the

> mite-infested substrate in a closed drawer or other closed container

> along with a volume of the selected plant oil. The plant oil can be

> applied to the substrate in a variety of manners as can be understood

> from the following detailed description.

>

> [0009] These and other features and aspects of the present invention can

> be better appreciated from the following description of certain

> preferred embodiments.

> DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF CERTAIN PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

> [0010] I discovered that exposing woolen clothing or other soft fabrics

> infested with house dust mites to the vapors of several plant

> oils—including the oils of Anise, Balsam, Basil, Bay, Birch,

> Cajeput, Camphor, Caraway, Cinnamon, Clove, Coriander, Dill, Fennell,

> Fir, Garlic, Lavender, Lavendin, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Nutmeg,

> Peppermint, Pine, Rosemary, Rue, Sage, Spearmint, Tea Tree, Thuja,

> Thyme, Wintergreen and Ylang-Ylang—kills the mites in such clothing

> as well as their eggs.

>

> [0011] The oils used are aromatherapy-grade oils produced by steam

> distillation of the specific plant, and readily available commercially

> from many suppliers. These oils release vapors spontaneously, and thus

> can be placed in contact with the mite infested substrate in many ways,

> e.g. placing a few drops of the oil on an absorbent material such as a

> paper towel or piece of cotton, which is then placed in a closed

> container, such as a closed drawer or a sweater storage box, containing

> the infested fabric. Alternatively, several drops of the oil may be

> placed in a plastic or glass dish within such a closed container.

> Application may also be effected by spraying a mist of the oil onto the

> substrate by means of a simple atomizer, and then placing the treated

> object into a sealed container that allows the accumulation of the oil

> vapor. In the case of substrates which can not be placed within closed

> containers for treatment, such as carpets, the vapor of the oil may be

> contained long enough for it to have its desired effect by placing an

> impermeable barrier such as plastic sheeting over the carpet which has

> been sprayed with the oil, and leaving such barrier in place for a

> sufficient time to kill mites, such as, for example, 24 hours.

> Additional methods of dispersing the vapor of the oils include the use

> of a packet containing a solution or gel of the plant oil having on at

> least one surface of the packet a permeable membrane through which the

> vapor volatilizes either spontaneously or with the help of electric

> heat, as in an air freshener. All of these methods have proven to be

> effective.

>

> [0012] The substrates encompassed by the methods of the present

> invention include without limitation clothing, carpeting, bedding

> materials, upholstery, toys made from fabrics, and other soft fabrics.

>

> [0013] The present invention is further described in the following

> working examples, which are intended to illustrate the invention without

> limiting its scope.

> EXAMPLE 1

> [0014] The ability of various plant oils to kill house dust mites was

> assessed by placing three drops of the oil being tested into a Petri

> dish containing D. pteronyssinus cultures. Cultures were examined

> microscopically 3, 8, 24 and 48 hours later. It was discovered that the

> vapor of some oils killed all mites by 8 hours, while others had no

> effect even after 24 hours of exposure. The following table lists those

According to this company's studies, cedar oil did not kill house

dust mites.

[0026] Cedar -

I'm under the impression that dust mites are easier to kill than

some of the other mites or whatever critters we're dealing with...

which brings me to the thought that are we just wasting our time

with cedar and cedar based products like cedarcide? I had just

ordered 3 more gallons today! (that's $250 after shipping!)

>

> Description: FIELD OF THE INVENTION

> [0001] This invention pertains to a method for killing house dust

mites

> in soft materials such as clothing.

> BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

> [0002] It has been known for many years that common house dust is

an

> important cause of asthma, rhinitis and eczema in allergic

individuals.

> The mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and related mites are

the

> major sources of house dust allergen in temperate climates

including the

> United States. Dust mites are eight-legged arachnids, relatives of

> spiders. They live in close association with humans, their main

food

> source being the shed scales from skin. A major protein allergen

present

> in the fecal particles of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Der p

I,

> can cause acute asthma symptoms when present at levels greater than

> 10μg per gram of dust.

>

> [0003] Dust mites are photophobic, and live within soft materials

such

> as pillows, mattresses, blankets and clothing. One study revealed

20,000

> live dust mites in a jacket. Another study showed mean Der p I

levels

> of 15.9 μg/gm in all clothing and 21.0 μg/gm in woolen garments.

> Hot water washing, dry cleaning, freezing and prolonged sun

exposure can

> kill mites in fabrics. These methods are not practical for all

fabrics,

> or may not be practical to do frequently.

>

> [0004] Since mites are not insects and are not even closely

related to

> insects, it is not surprising that many insecticides do not kill

mites.

> Chemical miticides exist which can kill some types of mites, but

most of

> these have been developed for agricultural use, to kill plant-

eating

> mites which infest growing crops or stored grain, and which

constitute

> different mite species. Use of a chemical substance indoors, and

> particularly on clothing or carpeting in close contact with the

user,

> obviously requires that the chemical be safe and pleasant.

>

> [0005] Despite advances in treatment, morbidity, mortality and

costs

> related to asthma and other allergic diseases continue to rise.

Since

> house dust mites are a major cause of these conditions, there is a

need

> in the art for a safe and effective way of killing mites in

clothing and

> other fabrics.

> SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

> [0006] The present inventor has found, surprisingly, that exposing

> woolen or other fabrics to the vapors of certain pleasant-smelling

plant

> oils, including wintergreen oil, lavandin oil, Ylang-Ylang oil, and

> others, kills house dust mites in those fabrics.

>

> [0007] In one aspect of the present invention, a method for killing

> house dust mites which are living in or infesting a fabric

substrate is

> disclosed. The method includes the step of exposing said mite-

infested

> substrate to a vapor of at least one plant oil. The plant oil may

be

> selected from the group of Anise, Balsam, Basil, Bay, Birch,

Cajeput,

> Camphor, Caraway, Cinnamon, Clove, Coriander, Dill, Fennell, Fir,

> Garlic, Lavender, Lavendin, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Nutmeg,

Peppermint,

> Pine, Rosemary, Rue, Sage, Spearmint, Tea Tree, Thuja, Thyme,

> Wintergreen and Ylang-Ylang.

>

> [0008] In a preferred method, the exposing step comprises placing

the

> mite-infested substrate in a closed drawer or other closed

container

> along with a volume of the selected plant oil. The plant oil can be

> applied to the substrate in a variety of manners as can be

understood

> from the following detailed description.

>

> [0009] These and other features and aspects of the present

invention can

> be better appreciated from the following description of certain

> preferred embodiments.

> DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF CERTAIN PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

> [0010] I discovered that exposing woolen clothing or other soft

fabrics

> infested with house dust mites to the vapors of several plant

> oils—including the oils of Anise, Balsam, Basil, Bay, Birch,

> Cajeput, Camphor, Caraway, Cinnamon, Clove, Coriander, Dill,

Fennell,

> Fir, Garlic, Lavender, Lavendin, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Nutmeg,

> Peppermint, Pine, Rosemary, Rue, Sage, Spearmint, Tea Tree, Thuja,

> Thyme, Wintergreen and Ylang-Ylang—kills the mites in such clothing

> as well as their eggs.

>

> [0011] The oils used are aromatherapy-grade oils produced by steam

> distillation of the specific plant, and readily available

commercially

> from many suppliers. These oils release vapors spontaneously, and

thus

> can be placed in contact with the mite infested substrate in many

ways,

> e.g. placing a few drops of the oil on an absorbent material such

as a

> paper towel or piece of cotton, which is then placed in a closed

> container, such as a closed drawer or a sweater storage box,

containing

> the infested fabric. Alternatively, several drops of the oil may be

> placed in a plastic or glass dish within such a closed container.

> Application may also be effected by spraying a mist of the oil

onto the

> substrate by means of a simple atomizer, and then placing the

treated

> object into a sealed container that allows the accumulation of the

oil

> vapor. In the case of substrates which can not be placed within

closed

> containers for treatment, such as carpets, the vapor of the oil

may be

> contained long enough for it to have its desired effect by placing

an

> impermeable barrier such as plastic sheeting over the carpet which

has

> been sprayed with the oil, and leaving such barrier in place for a

> sufficient time to kill mites, such as, for example, 24 hours.

> Additional methods of dispersing the vapor of the oils include the

use

> of a packet containing a solution or gel of the plant oil having

on at

> least one surface of the packet a permeable membrane through which

the

> vapor volatilizes either spontaneously or with the help of electric

> heat, as in an air freshener. All of these methods have proven to

be

> effective.

>

> [0012] The substrates encompassed by the methods of the present

> invention include without limitation clothing, carpeting, bedding

> materials, upholstery, toys made from fabrics, and other soft

fabrics.

>

> [0013] The present invention is further described in the following

> working examples, which are intended to illustrate the invention

without

> limiting its scope.

> EXAMPLE 1

> [0014] The ability of various plant oils to kill house dust mites

was

> assessed by placing three drops of the oil being tested into a

Petri

> dish containing D. pteronyssinus cultures. Cultures were

examined

> microscopically 3, 8, 24 and 48 hours later. It was discovered

that the

> vapor of some oils killed all mites by 8 hours, while others had no

> effect even after 24 hours of exposure. The following table lists

When you say " mite free " are you saying burning/heating menthol

> >

> > Description: FIELD OF THE INVENTION

> > [0001] This invention pertains to a method for killing house

dust mites

> > in soft materials such as clothing.

> > BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

> > [0002] It has been known for many years that common house dust

is an

> > important cause of asthma, rhinitis and eczema in allergic

individuals.

> > The mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and related mites are

the

> > major sources of house dust allergen in temperate climates

including the

> > United States. Dust mites are eight-legged arachnids, relatives

of

> > spiders. They live in close association with humans, their main

food

> > source being the shed scales from skin. A major protein allergen

present

> > in the fecal particles of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Der

p I,

> > can cause acute asthma symptoms when present at levels greater

than

> > 10μg per gram of dust.

> >

> > [0003] Dust mites are photophobic, and live within soft

materials such

> > as pillows, mattresses, blankets and clothing. One study

revealed 20,000

> > live dust mites in a jacket. Another study showed mean Der p

I levels

> > of 15.9 μg/gm in all clothing and 21.0 μg/gm in woolen

garments.

> >

> >

Since

> > house dust mites are a major cause of these conditions, there is

a need

> > in the art for a safe and effective way of killing mites in

clothing and

> > other fabrics.

> > SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

> > [0006] The present inventor has found, surprisingly, that

exposing

> > woolen or other fabrics to the vapors of certain pleasant-

smelling plant

> > oils, including wintergreen oil, lavandin oil, Ylang-Ylang oil,

and

> > others, kills house dust mites in those fabrics.

> >

> > [0007] In one aspect of the present invention, a method for

killing

> > house dust mites which are living in or infesting a fabric

substrate is

> > disclosed. The method includes the step of exposing said mite-

infested

> > substrate to a vapor of at least one plant oil. The plant oil

may be

> > selected from the group of Anise, Balsam, Basil, Bay, Birch,

Cajeput,

> > Camphor, Caraway, Cinnamon, Clove, Coriander, Dill, Fennell, Fir,

> > Garlic, Lavender, Lavendin, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Nutmeg,

Peppermint,

> > Pine, Rosemary, Rue, Sage, Spearmint, Tea Tree, Thuja, Thyme,

> > Wintergreen and Ylang-Ylang.

> >

> > [0008] In a preferred method, the exposing step comprises

placing the

> > mite-infested substrate in a closed drawer or other closed

container

> > along with a volume of the selected plant oil. The plant oil can

be

> > applied to the substrate in a variety of manners as can be

understood

> > from the following detailed description.

> >

> > [0009] These and other features and aspects of the present

invention can

> > be better appreciated from the following description of certain

> > preferred embodiments.

> > DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF CERTAIN PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

> > [0010] I discovered that exposing woolen clothing or other soft

fabrics

> > infested with house dust mites to the vapors of several plant

> > oils—including the oils of Anise, Balsam, Basil, Bay, Birch,

> > Cajeput, Camphor, Caraway, Cinnamon, Clove, Coriander, Dill,

Fennell,

> > Fir, Garlic, Lavender, Lavendin, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Nutmeg,

> > Peppermint, Pine, Rosemary, Rue, Sage, Spearmint, Tea Tree,

Thuja,

> > Thyme, Wintergreen and Ylang-Ylang—kills the mites in such

clothing

> > as well as their eggs.

> >

> > [0011] The oils used are aromatherapy-grade oils produced by

steam

> > distillation of the specific plant, and readily available

commercially

> > from many suppliers. These oils release vapors spontaneously,

and thus

> > can be placed in contact with the mite infested substrate in

many ways,

> > e.g. placing a few drops of the oil on an absorbent material

such as a

> > paper towel or piece of cotton, which is then placed in a closed

> > container, such as a closed drawer or a sweater storage box,

containing

> > the infested fabric. Alternatively, several drops of the oil may

be

> > placed in a plastic or glass dish within such a closed container.

> > Application may also be effected by spraying a mist of the oil

onto the

> > substrate by means of a simple atomizer, and then placing the

treated

> > object into a sealed container that allows the accumulation of

the oil

> > vapor. In the case of substrates which can not be placed within

closed

> > containers for treatment, such as carpets, the vapor of the oil

may be

> > contained long enough for it to have its desired effect by

placing an

> > impermeable barrier such as plastic sheeting over the carpet

which has

> > been sprayed with the oil, and leaving such barrier in place for

a

> > sufficient time to kill mites, such as, for example, 24 hours.

> > Additional methods of dispersing the vapor of the oils include

the use

> > of a packet containing a solution or gel of the plant oil having

on at

> > least one surface of the packet a permeable membrane through

which the

> > vapor volatilizes either spontaneously or with the help of

electric

> > heat, as in an air freshener. All of these methods have proven

to be

> > effective.

> >

> > [0012] The substrates encompassed by the methods of the present

> > invention include without limitation clothing, carpeting, bedding

> > materials, upholstery, toys made from fabrics, and other soft

fabrics.

> >

> > [0013] The present invention is further described in the

following

> > working examples, which are intended to illustrate the invention

without

> > limiting its scope.

> > EXAMPLE 1

> > [0014] The ability of various plant oils to kill house dust

mites was

> > assessed by placing three drops of the oil being tested into a

Petri

> > dish containing D. pteronyssinus cultures. Cultures were

examined

> > microscopically 3, 8, 24 and 48 hours later. It was discovered

that the

> > vapor of some oils killed all mites by 8 hours, while others had

no

> > effect even after 24 hours of exposure. The following table

lists those

Thats what I'm saying exactly....the car has not been sprayed with

anything for a long time. The only thing we have used to keep the

car free of critters is menthol crystals. We don't do it everyday,

but that might not be a bad idea in the beginning. Go buy a $4.00

coffee cup warmer from Walgreens, take the metal cup off a tea light

candle, fill the cup with menthol crystals, put the coffee cup warmer

on the driver side seat or floorboard, use a extension cord to the

nearest outlet and let run overnight. If you really want to make it

strong use two tea light cups filled with menthol at the same time

on the coffee cup warmer.

> > > Description: FIELD OF THE INVENTION

> > > [0001] This invention pertains to a method for killing house

> > > in soft materials such as clothing.

> > > BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

> > > [0002] It has been known for many years that common house dust

> is an

> > > important cause of asthma, rhinitis and eczema in allergic

> individuals.

> > > The mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and related mites are

> the

> > > major sources of house dust allergen in temperate climates

> including the

> > > United States. Dust mites are eight-legged arachnids, relatives

> of

> > > spiders. They live in close association with humans, their main

> food

> p I,

> > > can cause acute asthma symptoms when present at levels greater

> > >

> > > [0003] Dust mites are photophobic, and live within soft

> materials such

> > > Hot water washing, dry cleaning, freezing and prolonged sun

> exposure can

> fabrics,

> > > or may not be practical to do frequently.

> > >

> > >

> Since

> > > house dust mites are a major cause of these conditions, there is

> a need

> > > in the art for a safe and effective way of killing mites in

> clothing and

> > > other fabrics.

> > > SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

> > > [0006] The present inventor has found, surprisingly, that

> exposing

> > > woolen or other fabrics to the vapors of certain pleasant-

> smelling plant

> > > oils, including wintergreen oil, lavandin oil, Ylang-Ylang oil,

> and

> > > others, kills house dust mites in those fabrics.

> > >

> > > [0007] In one aspect of the present invention, a method for

> killing

> > > house dust mites which are living in or infesting a fabric

> substrate is

> > > disclosed. The method includes the step of exposing said mite-

> infested

> > > substrate to a vapor of at least one plant oil. The plant oil

> may be

> > > selected from the group of Anise, Balsam, Basil, Bay, Birch,

> Cajeput,

> > > Camphor, Caraway, Cinnamon, Clove, Coriander, Dill, Fennell, Fir,

> > > Garlic, Lavender, Lavendin, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Nutmeg,

> Peppermint,

> > > Pine, Rosemary, Rue, Sage, Spearmint, Tea Tree, Thuja, Thyme,

> > > Wintergreen and Ylang-Ylang.

> > >

> > > [0008] In a preferred method, the exposing step comprises

> placing the

> > > mite-infested substrate in a closed drawer or other closed

> container

> > > along with a volume of the selected plant oil. The plant oil can

> be

> > > applied to the substrate in a variety of manners as can be

> understood

> > > from the following detailed description.

> > >

> > > [0009] These and other features and aspects of the present

> invention can

> > > be better appreciated from the following description of certain

> > > preferred embodiments.

> > > DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF CERTAIN PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

> > > [0010] I discovered that exposing woolen clothing or other soft

> fabrics

> > > infested with house dust mites to the vapors of several plant

> > > oils—including the oils of Anise, Balsam, Basil, Bay, Birch,

> > > Cajeput, Camphor, Caraway, Cinnamon, Clove, Coriander, Dill,

> Fennell,

> > > Fir, Garlic, Lavender, Lavendin, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Nutmeg,

> > > Peppermint, Pine, Rosemary, Rue, Sage, Spearmint, Tea Tree,

> Thuja,

> > > Thyme, Wintergreen and Ylang-Ylang—kills the mites in such

> clothing

> > > as well as their eggs.

> > >

> > > [0011] The oils used are aromatherapy-grade oils produced by

> steam

> > > distillation of the specific plant, and readily available

> commercially

> > > from many suppliers. These oils release vapors spontaneously,

> and thus

> > > can be placed in contact with the mite infested substrate in

> many ways,

> > > e.g. placing a few drops of the oil on an absorbent material

> such as a

> > > paper towel or piece of cotton, which is then placed in a closed

> > > container, such as a closed drawer or a sweater storage box,

> containing

> > > the infested fabric. Alternatively, several drops of the oil may

> be

> > > placed in a plastic or glass dish within such a closed container.

> > > Application may also be effected by spraying a mist of the oil

> onto the

> > > substrate by means of a simple atomizer, and then placing the

> treated

> > > object into a sealed container that allows the accumulation of

> the oil

> > > vapor. In the case of substrates which can not be placed within

> closed

> > > containers for treatment, such as carpets, the vapor of the oil

> may be

> > > contained long enough for it to have its desired effect by

> placing an

> > > impermeable barrier such as plastic sheeting over the carpet

> which has

> > > been sprayed with the oil, and leaving such barrier in place for

> a

> > > sufficient time to kill mites, such as, for example, 24 hours.

> > > Additional methods of dispersing the vapor of the oils include

> the use

> > > of a packet containing a solution or gel of the plant oil having

> on at

> > > least one surface of the packet a permeable membrane through

> which the

> > > vapor volatilizes either spontaneously or with the help of

> electric

> > > heat, as in an air freshener. All of these methods have proven

> to be

> > > effective.

> > >

> > > [0012] The substrates encompassed by the methods of the present

> > > invention include without limitation clothing, carpeting, bedding

> > > materials, upholstery, toys made from fabrics, and other soft

> fabrics.

> > >

> > > [0013] The present invention is further described in the

> following

> > > working examples, which are intended to illustrate the invention

> without

> > > limiting its scope.

> > > EXAMPLE 1

> > > [0014] The ability of various plant oils to kill house dust

> mites was

> > > assessed by placing three drops of the oil being tested into a

> Petri

> > > dish containing D. pteronyssinus cultures. Cultures were

> examined

> > > microscopically 3, 8, 24 and 48 hours later. It was discovered

I found cedarcide a great tool as a rappelent, not a killer. I use it

on my body and head all the time. I especially like to spray my socks

and clothes with it. i've never spayed the house though. It's to

slippery on the HW flooring or me. I do think it would help suffocate

direct hits though. Trish's ESP essential oil mix which I've added

clove and eucyptus oil to, seems to be a killer in my car and house,

although not right away. And dust mites are easier to kill.

> >

> > Description: FIELD OF THE INVENTION

> > [0001] This invention pertains to a method for killing house dust

> mites

> > in soft materials such as clothing.

> > BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

> > [0002] It has been known for many years that common house dust is

> an

> > important cause of asthma, rhinitis and eczema in allergic

> individuals.

> > The mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and related mites are

> the

> > major sources of house dust allergen in temperate climates

> including the

> > United States. Dust mites are eight-legged arachnids, relatives of

> > spiders. They live in close association with humans, their main

> food

> > source being the shed scales from skin. A major protein allergen

> present

> > in the fecal particles of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Der

p

> I,

> > can cause acute asthma symptoms when present at levels greater

than

> > 10μg per gram of dust.

> >

> >

> >

> Since

> > house dust mites are a major cause of these conditions, there is

a

> need

> > in the art for a safe and effective way of killing mites in

> clothing and

> > other fabrics.

> > SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

> > [0006] The present inventor has found, surprisingly, that exposing

> > woolen or other fabrics to the vapors of certain pleasant-

smelling

> plant

> > oils, including wintergreen oil, lavandin oil, Ylang-Ylang oil,

and

> > others, kills house dust mites in those fabrics.

> >

> > [0007] In one aspect of the present invention, a method for

killing

> > house dust mites which are living in or infesting a fabric

> substrate is

> > disclosed. The method includes the step of exposing said mite-

> infested

> > substrate to a vapor of at least one plant oil. The plant oil may

> be

> > selected from the group of Anise, Balsam, Basil, Bay, Birch,

> Cajeput,

> > Camphor, Caraway, Cinnamon, Clove, Coriander, Dill, Fennell, Fir,

> > Garlic, Lavender, Lavendin, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Nutmeg,

> Peppermint,

> > Pine, Rosemary, Rue, Sage, Spearmint, Tea Tree, Thuja, Thyme,

> > Wintergreen and Ylang-Ylang.

> >

> > [0008] In a preferred method, the exposing step comprises placing

> the

> > mite-infested substrate in a closed drawer or other closed

> container

> > along with a volume of the selected plant oil. The plant oil can

be

> > applied to the substrate in a variety of manners as can be

> understood

> > from the following detailed description.

> >

> > [0009] These and other features and aspects of the present

> invention can

> > be better appreciated from the following description of certain

> > preferred embodiments.

> > DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF CERTAIN PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

> > [0010] I discovered that exposing woolen clothing or other soft

> fabrics

> > infested with house dust mites to the vapors of several plant

> > oils—including the oils of Anise, Balsam, Basil, Bay, Birch,

> > Cajeput, Camphor, Caraway, Cinnamon, Clove, Coriander, Dill,

> Fennell,

> > Fir, Garlic, Lavender, Lavendin, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Nutmeg,

> > Peppermint, Pine, Rosemary, Rue, Sage, Spearmint, Tea Tree, Thuja,

> > Thyme, Wintergreen and Ylang-Ylang—kills the mites in such

clothing

> > as well as their eggs.

> >

> > [0011] The oils used are aromatherapy-grade oils produced by steam

> > distillation of the specific plant, and readily available

> commercially

> > from many suppliers. These oils release vapors spontaneously, and

> thus

> > can be placed in contact with the mite infested substrate in many

> ways,

> > e.g. placing a few drops of the oil on an absorbent material such

> as a

> > paper towel or piece of cotton, which is then placed in a closed

> > container, such as a closed drawer or a sweater storage box,

> containing

> > the infested fabric. Alternatively, several drops of the oil may

be

> > placed in a plastic or glass dish within such a closed container.

> > Application may also be effected by spraying a mist of the oil

> onto the

> > substrate by means of a simple atomizer, and then placing the

> treated

> > object into a sealed container that allows the accumulation of

the

> oil

> > vapor. In the case of substrates which can not be placed within

> closed

> > containers for treatment, such as carpets, the vapor of the oil

> may be

> > contained long enough for it to have its desired effect by

placing

> an

> > impermeable barrier such as plastic sheeting over the carpet

which

> has

> > been sprayed with the oil, and leaving such barrier in place for a

> > sufficient time to kill mites, such as, for example, 24 hours.

> > Additional methods of dispersing the vapor of the oils include

the

> use

> > of a packet containing a solution or gel of the plant oil having

> on at

> > least one surface of the packet a permeable membrane through

which

> the

> > vapor volatilizes either spontaneously or with the help of

electric

> > heat, as in an air freshener. All of these methods have proven to

> be

> > effective.

> >

> > [0012] The substrates encompassed by the methods of the present

> > invention include without limitation clothing, carpeting, bedding

> > materials, upholstery, toys made from fabrics, and other soft

> fabrics.

> >

> > [0013] The present invention is further described in the following

> > working examples, which are intended to illustrate the invention

> without

> > limiting its scope.

> > EXAMPLE 1

> > [0014] The ability of various plant oils to kill house dust mites

> was

> > assessed by placing three drops of the oil being tested into a

> Petri

I agree. The Cedarcide saved me at first. I was in thestate that several here have been in lately. I clicked inhere for some comfort and a touchstone with sanity andwas met with attack instead of comfort. I was brand newto all of this and was covered with things that were all overmy house, yard, dogs, and had my cat half dead. Vets and Doctors, Dept. of Agriculture, Universities, no one was of any help, nor even wanted to be.Then awesome people here began to contact me privately (inview of the negativity toward me here on the forum), and theCedarcide, at that time, cleared up my body enough that I could regain some mental balance. But with continued use theefficacy waned and I did not get them out of the house oryard in spite of spraying and spraying even while stumbling and dizzy from exhaustion. My kitty, "Bosco", of 15 years, who was100% healthy as a kitten prior to this, died in my arms. Also, the Cedarcide messed up my lungs bigtime.I like the suggestion of the ESP Essential Oils with the additivesand will try that. But I still need something affordable to spraythe yard with or I will never make any headway.... haven't foundanything yet. Tried the pesticide man but no help there. doe's amazing mix of Epsom, Borax, and Dawn is already mixed up and in my Chapin sprayer. I am just waiting for enoughenergy to accomplish the job. It's a half-acre with a million infestedfruit and nut trees and boulders all over - - no flat or level land - -a really big job. Also, I'm putting Cinnamon, Ginger, Nutmeg, and Cloves in my morningcoffee. And, with the success that KatyJill has had with the Dustmite solutionand it lasting for 6 months at a time, I am going to spray my car withthat! > > >> > > > > > > > > Put sachets of menthol crystals in your cars. Wow, Save!!! How totally WO!!!You are just full of great information. There are not words enough to thank you,but I do. Where do you get your menthol? I ordered from Mt. Rose, and it came to $50 with shpg. for 1lb. Not an expense I can continue to support. Earlier in here someone had said they found them at the 99¢ store, but I have spent large blocks of time going everywhere and no one has even heard of them locally. I would appreciate not having to pay that huge shpg. fee!More questions please: what is your protocol on using the Sawyer's soaking solution? Just how effective is it? Could I use it on the animals' bedding so I don't have to wash all of that every day? And just how free are you now of this curse? I know you are continuing to maintain your precautions, but with all of that effort, are you now living free of symptoms? And lastly: what do you do with your laptop? I thought I had that under control until yesterday when I actually got on and did stuff - - last night I was covered with them, no sleep even with soaking as usually clears them right off, and continuing coating myself all night. Even this morning, dressed in ExOfficios wonderful salvation clothes, they are all over me. My laptop efforts failed.....keeping me way more off the net again!!! I a solitary here with this. No mate. No family....they think I'm mental and this doesn't exist, that it's just a ploy to "get attention". The internet and phone are my only access to any support or education....when I got kicked off of this forum, I had NOTHING. The people who reached out to me personally, out in the real world, literally saved my life....not because of suicide, but because I was literally being killed (as with Bosco) by these things. I only (in much terror) inhaled the enzymes because I could no longer breathe and knew I would not make it through the night. My doctor, depricatingly and with disgust, said to call 911. So I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. Thankfully it was a miracle method to get them out of my respiratory system. Okay. So what do you do to keep your laptop un-scarey?Guess that's enough heart-out-pouring for now.> > > >> > > > > > > > > > > > Put sachets of menthol crystals in your cars. Willow,

I get my crystals from www.lotioncrafters.com $19.50 per pound.

I do seem to remember someone found them for cheaper than that.

The Sawyers....follow the directions on the box, it works pretty well

as long as your critter is repelled by it. You will have to experiment.

My home enviroment is pretty good. I vacuum every 3 to 4 days and

don't feel them while in the house or using the computer. I know

better than to say they are gone....because they are still on our

cats....thats a battle I haven't won yet. It helps that my wife is

in this with me and we work together. My biggest problem now is

internal. I will also be using the ESP products in the future and

we are using MMS now and that has been of great help to us.

The laptop? Get a extra large ziplock bag and keep the laptop in it

along with one (or more) of your little baggies of menthol.

This method also works well for your shoes. You could also put extra

bounce dryer sheets in the ziplock as well. They Hate Bounce.

I put used Bounce sheets inside my pillowcases and under my sheets.

With all the laundry we do we have plenty of Bounce sheets left over.

I actually put menthol crystals inside of my shoes one time then

microwaved them so the crystals would melt. Made your feet all

cool when you put them on, but no critter would come near them lol.

I also use Gold Bond on my body after a shower, I use either the one

in the blue bottle (highest menthol content) or the one in the green

bottle that has zinc and menthol.

As with anything, what works for me might not work for you, you might

have a tougher bug than I do.
