Help with Severe Mite Infestation

I am 95% sure my home, birds and family are infested with mites. I

have been battling this for years and have been trying to figure out

what this is and now believe it could be mites. My dr's. have told me

it was a number of things including eczema. I have tried various

topical foams, shampoos, ointments to no avail. I have red, itchy

bumps on my scalp, face and neck area. I have seen the little " pepper

like " specks on the scalp, have seen the white little seed like

objects, and have severe itching at night. It also flares up during

my menstual cycle for some reason. My husband also has itching on his

scalp (not as severe as mine) so I think he has become infested.

However, I have never seen a bug crawling or anything. Never. I have

seven birds/parrots that are kept in a room that is connected to my

home (a four season room) but do not share the same HVAC system.

However the birds are taken out of the room frequently and brought

into the main part of the home. Alot of the birds are " rescue " birds

and have come from dirty, unsanitary situations and may have brought

the mites into my home. I am not sure. In any case I also have young

children who I don't believe are infested as of yet but I want to

erradicate these mites (if this is truly what is going on) before it

gets even worse. I have been living with this for a few years now and

I feel like I am going insane with this. My pets also itch quite a

bit and I believe they are infested as well. So, my questions are

this: Does this sound like mites and what are my next steps? What do

I do about my birds? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give

to me and my family. I am truly at my witts end here.
