Guest guest
KJ, We'd go broke buying nothing but prepared products, especially the natural ones. We have found ways to integrate essential oils without spending big bucks. What we do is take a bottle of Costco's Kirkland signature conditioner (it's huge, cheap and lasts forever), dump the contents into a pan and place on stove top on low heat. We stir in generous portions of clove, anise, neem, and eucalyptus oil. Then we stir in some Humco sulfur powder. If you can stand the fumes, you can also add menthol. We order menthol crystals from the local pharmacy, heat up some crystals in a small pan, then immediately add melted menthol to conditioner. My understanding is the clove and anise kill the mites, and the menthol repels them. So it's an effective combination if you leave the conditioner on overnight, or better yet, 24/7. For the skin, we use an almond oil base and add a few drops of clove, peppermint, tea tree, neem, and eucalyptus oil. If you have a leftover essential oil tincture bottle, you can use it to house your concoction for easy application. After experimenting with many oils, we find those of the mint family most effective at repelling these things - especially peppermint. And I personally prefer almond to olive oil as a base. It's less sticky and spreads easier. If activity is heightened, I top off the essential oil mixture with my husband's sulfur creme, taken from this recipe: http://www.safe2use.com/scabiesboard/2005_03/12493.html We've also found a cheaper substitute for overpriced Gold Bond Medicated Lotion (thanks to trly for Gold Bond idea). Natural lotions can be purchased in bulk at most health food stores. Nature's Gate is a good brand. Mix in some menthol crystals (as described above) and eucalytus oil to your lotion and you have a swell alternative to Gold Bond, without the petroleum, additives and inflated price-tag. I am still searching for a petroleum alternative for the sulfure creme, though. Now I need to investigate ESP products for cheaper, homemade alternatives... > > > > > > > > > > Well I have to say after reading and learning what has to be > done > > > to > > > > > eradicate these mites I have to say I am so very overwhelmed. > I > > > just > > > > > cannot believe the extreme at which one has to go to in order > to > > > kill > > > > > them and rid them from your home.
