Guest guest
Sherry, If I were you, I'd demand a referral to an Occupational Therapist or CHANGE DOCTORS! Our first pediatrician was very unconcerned about 's feeding problems and denied that he was aspirating/refluxing. He told me the problems were all in my head or were being caused me (made me feel like a ~great~ mother). I finally got smart and found a new pediatrician. She immediately referred us to an OT for testing (the barium swallow) and we found out the EXACT cause of 's feeding problems and how to accommodate them. Within a week, we were having much better luck dealing with the problems and now he is all better. You have questions that DESERVE to be answered, and an OT is the correct person to do it for you. If your current pediatrician is shrugging off your problems, I'd find another who will treat your son with more concern. FWIW, the barium swallow will let you see where the food goes as Mason eats. You can actually see if his small uvula is allowing food to go down wrong. Why a doctor wouldn't want to know that for sure is beyond me. In the meantime, here are a couple of links I found on the uvula: Definition of Uvula: http://www.nytimes.com/learning/students/scienceqa/archive/001226.html Mostly about epiglottis, but last sentence describes normal function of uvula: http://www.innerbody.com/text/dige02.html Good luck, and I hope you get some results. This goes down in the same category as doctors who don't believe in helmet therapy. Sorry I sort of vented here, but I hate closed minds and ignorance!
