recurring plagio after helmet......

Well, - I wouldn't say it cannot happen because it has in a few

cases-but no one really knows why-per se. It shouldn't happen but some

mothers havenoted a regression and I only know of one Mom who had to get a

second helmet because of it-but I would be skeptical to say it wont happen.

If Grace is doing fine in thehelmet and your ortho has no objections (which I

don't know why he would) then I would just continue to wear it around the

clock then there is no question. Hope this helps.

Hi just a quick question when we went in 2 weeks ago for Graces

helmet check and adjustment the orthotist said that by 2 months of

wear we could look at cutting her time down. Grace doesn't roll all

the way over yet or sit up etc and we are still working on the last

of the tilt from tort, she is not quite 5 months so I am concerned

that if the helmet comes off before all of this that her head could

possibly go back. The orthotist said that cannot happen. But it seems

like I have read posts etc where this has happened. Any adivce or

stats on this to read would be appreciated. and Grace

You're right - there are some people here who feel as if regression has

occurred after the helmet treatment was over. Of course, this is a pretty

rare occurence. I would probably take a wait and see approach before being

too concerned about reducing the time in the helmet. If in 2 months time she

is still having issues with rolling and tort you should discuss your very

valid concerns with your ortho. It may be possible to extend the treatment at

night and at naptimes if the helmet still fits.

He probably said that because incidences of regression are very, very rare.

It's possible that he has never heard of a case in which that happened!!

Yes, plagio can regress after a child stops wearing their helmet or

band. Especially if the child is younger, like Grace, and isn't

sitting up much yet and still spending a lot of time on their back.

It is uncommon, but I have heard of it happening. If Grace's helmet

is still fitting her well, then I personally would leave it on full

time.

's neurosurgeon (from the renowned Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh) also told me and my husband (at s 6 wk. in helmet check-up) that 's head would not go back to the flattened shape again!! I didn't believe him -- my husband did!! He also said that 's head looked really good and didn't think he would be in his helmet much longer!! (That was back in September '01 -- he was in his band for approx. 6 wks!!)

is still wearing his STARband today, and according to his orthotist, will be wearing it until he is 14 mos. (March 25th)!!!

Soooo -- go figure!!!!!

PS -- If he is out of his helmet because he is sick (and when he is sick I do take it off of him - esp. if he has a fever), I make sure that he does not lay on his back. He is a tummy sleeper now, but if he does lay on his back, he still wants to turn his head to the right (he had right-sided flattening and left-sided tort). I think he turned that way for so long (he was banded at 7 mos.), that now he just prefers it.

Re: recurring plagio after helmet......

Thanks Beck I would love for her to have her time cut down in the helmet but seeing as how we started her so young on it I don't feel like a few extra months would be so bad. -- For more plagio info
