Guest guest
My name is . I am new to this site, but have been reading the posts to try and learn more about plagiocephaly. I believe that my 5 months old son has plagiocephaly. He has a flat spot on the right side of his head, his ears are misaligned, his right cheek is " fuller " than the other side, and he has a head tilt. I have taken him to a family practice doctor, 2 pediatricians, and most recently, he was evaluated by a pediatric neurosurgeon at the University of Minnesota. I have been assured by everyone not to worry about the flat spot, it will round out on its own. The ped. neuro. did confirm that he has a head tilt and recommended doing stretching exercises. I have been trying repositioning for about a month, and have noticed a little improvement with his ears. I am still concerned about the facial asymmetry, but don't know what else to do, as the " specialist " did not recommend any further treatment. Has anyone else had this experience? Guest guest
Hey -yes your situation is similar to Atleast 850 other members of this board. We tried repositioning with my son but we ended up banding him because we were getting nowhere and he was too strong for us and would get out of everything to get back on his flat right side. We are now DOC graduates and very pleased with the results. I am not sure what is available in South Dakota but here are some useful sites for you to check out. Also we used air care alliance and received free flights as wehad to fly to Georgia every week from Tenn to get treatment for my son. If you want to know more about that email me personally and I will give you all the details of how it works my address is bbbhand@.... Anyhow here are some links. I am so glad you have found this site you will find alot of support and answers here. I am just wondering where to turn next since the specialist did not recommend further treatment-- how many doctors should I take him to before I should just accept their opinion that he will be OK? It is frustrating that I seem to be the only one who is worried about this!! you can get an opinion from a neurosurgeon or cranial facial specialist who can give you a prescription for it. You will need a script. I would recc. taking lots of info from the web to your dr and you can always insist on a referral from him for the helmet-we have had many moms who can tell you they have pushed their DR's into referring them-so don't let that stop you! You can find a list of plagio-friendly specialists at this link... http://www.plagiocephaly.org/ppcs-location.asp . Unfortunately, so many doctors still don't realize there is help out there! Guest guest
: WElcome to our group! Your son is still at a good age to possibly see some improvement with his head w/repositioning. Check out the link Marci gave you for some good repositioning tips. However, if your son does in fact have torticollis, then repositioning would most likely not be very beneficial. I agree with Marci & 's replies about checking into a physical therapist. Ask your ped. for a referral at the very least for an evaluation from a phys. therapist. Many of us in the group have gotten the good old " head will round out over time " speel. It possibly could, but none of us have the much wished for crystal ball to look into! If you feel strongly enough that your son needs a helmet or a band, then go back to the ped. neuro or pediatrician and demand a prescription for a band (yes, a prescription is required for bands/helmets). Please be sure you keep us updated on your son. I again welcome you & look forward to hearing more from you. Best of luck. Debbie Abby's mom DOCgrad MI > My name is .
