Guest guest
For all of you out there with STARBand experience, I have a question. My daughter Naomi has mild torticollis and a mild case of plagio. We have been treating her tort for almost three months with a PT, and are very pleased with the progress on that. Almost three weeks ago we recieved our STARband. It seems to be loose to me. She is flat on her left side, and the right side fits a little tighter, but the left side is looser. Is this normal? The explanation that I am getting from the orthotist is that this is room for her flat side to round out. I guess that it makes sense, but I am just wondering. I do trust my orthotist (mostly), but it would be better to hear from someone else. I have seen other babies in my area, they usually have on DOC bands though. The parents also are not all that helpful, at least the two I have run into, so I have not really been able to ask a lot of questions. Also, should we be seeing changes by now? I think she is growing, her clothes seem to be getting smaller, but then again it has only been three weeks. We did go back for a follow up with the orthotist last week, and some slight changes were shown (they actually do a laser scan here in GA, so the results are pretty accurate). I just don't think that I see too much change. I am sure that I am just worrying for nothing, but I would appreciate anyone who has experience with this. Thanks again. , Mom to Naomi (STARband 2/8/02) GA
Guest guest
Hey sorrythose Doc moms were less than helpful-that is a shame. The looseness is normal so don't worry as long as it is not slipping so far forward she cant see or there aren't any red spots that wont go away from rubbing you re fine. I am intrigues about the laser scan-how does that work??? You will continue to see great improvement I am sure-have they estimated how long Miss Naomi has to wear the band? Keep us posted! Guest guest
Beck - Thanks. I think Naomi's band is how it should be. See my post with Thanks at the end for a better description of the laser. It is really cool. Naomi is supposed to wear her band only about 2 months, so we are on week three now. I am sure will will be seeing more improvement soon. Thanks for your thoughts. mom to Naomi (STARband 2/8/02) GA > Hey sorrythose Doc moms were less than helpful-that is a shame. Guest guest
One of the things that our ortho checked for at 's initial fitting was whether the band was too long for her shoulders. It was just a little bit so she cut a little bit from the bottom. She also checked for the ear holes and the eyes. Even then, it shifted forward and slightly to one side. A thin piece of padding was added later and then the fit seemed perfect. I think that I would ask if it's bumping the shoulders - especially if the bumping is moving the helmet. Ours was also loose, but I was told that that's how they all start. The only area that was snuggly "fitted" was her holding spots. Re: Starband question Clara's new STARband is also long in the back, longer than the one that failed. It seems to be working for her, though. Her back *can* hit it, but it's not tipping the helmet forward on a regular basis. I'm guessing your daughter, like mine, has a longer head with quite a bit of overhang in the occipital area. It's a question of how often the helmet is shrugged out of position, versus the estimated backward tipping and general instability if material were removed. So to answer your question, I think it is implicit in the STARband design, as the back is significantly heavier than the front, and there is no chin strap.-- Thad LaundervilleMontpelier, VTClara age 19 1/2 months, in STARband 3 1/2 months. On Nov 25, 2009, at 4:18 PM, annettemarek wrote:> I'm wondering if the helmet is too long and needs to be cut so that > it does not hit her shoulders when she moves her head but I can't > tell.
