Don't dread the helmet-we dreaded it too to start and then loved it and missed it when it was gone. My son was in his DOC band from 3-6 months-and never had any regression after that. But by 6 months he was rolling over and sleeping on his belly a lot too. It is myimpression that once the head is shaped correctly the reoccurrence of flattening is not likely (not to say that it has never happened because ithas but it is rare) But I think they get more mobile and by 10 months I am sure your little guy will really be on the go. Would love to hear more about him and you guys. Where are you from-who diagnosed you? What type of helmet are you using??? Here is a link to some files and such that might help you. Make sure you have someone with you for the casting that is the worst part but over in 10 months and forgotten all about once they get in the nice warm fun bath. If you have a bottle or a toy that can distract him while they are casting that is helpful too. Another Mom suggested wearing hats on your child in preparation for the helmet-although my son hated hats we did not have one problem with him taking to the helmet. We played soothing music during ourcasting process and left an undershirt on my son so he wasn't completely naked. If you haven't introduced suckers yet now might be a good time and a great diversion for the process and most of all stay calm-if you are calm then they do better. I cried but hubby was there and as cool as a cucumber. OK here are the links. Welcome to the board-so glad you found us and I am sure things will go great!

I'm new to the group, and my 8 month old will have his helmet fitted

this Friday. My husband and I are dreading the helmet, and would

appreciate any helpful hints to prepare us. The doctor thinks he'll

only need it for 2 months, but if he has it off at 10 months,

couldn't his head just flatten out again since the repositioning of

his head during sleep hasn't helped? I'd really appreciate any

comments from those who've been there.

I will tell you what everyone told me when we began this journey two months ago. Time flies! I can't believe Grace has already had her helmet for 2 months. I remember thinking when she got it that this would be the longest couple of months of my life (that she would have to wear it) and it has been just the opposite. But I too am wondering about what will happen when the helmet comes off and many people have advised me to listen to my mom instincts. So that is what I am doing. The orthotist said that at her check this week we can look at cutting time down and I do not think she is ready yet as she has just started rolling all the way over this week and is in a transition (she is 5 1/2 months) and we are still working on her torticollis (she has a slight tilt left) I do not want to see the work the helmet has done go to waste. So we are choosing right now to not start cutting time down on helmet wear yet. We will reasses it maybe at 3 months wear. Hope this helps some! and Good luck at the fitting ! --

Hi there. I am not sure about the reflatting of the head, because I have never heard about it happening. I know that this is a very hard time, but remember that it is still your little baby underneath all that plastic. This may make your situation seem a little better- my son has had his on for 7 months, and has 6 to go. 13 MONTHS!!!!!! Your 2 months will fly by. It took my son only minutes to get used to his helmet, and he never has had trouble sleeping in it. Good Luck. Lori.

Hello and welcome to the group. I think you will be amazed at how quickly

your baby adjusts to the helmet. My daughter never cared even for one minute

about having a big hunk of plastic on her head. I was shocked and amazed! She

has always been such a fussy little thing - I didn't believe for one minute

that I wouldn't have a fight on my hands. I was so surprised when she put up

NO resistance and just went about her business as usual! In all truth it was

harder for my hubby and I then it was for her.

Is your baby getting a locally made helmet, DOCband or STARband? I'm glad you

have joined the group and I hope you will share more of your story with us.

Hi Michele,

wore a locally made helmet from the time she was 9 months old until she

was 15 months old so I guess about 6 months. I've heard some really good

things about Childrens Hospital in Boston so hopefully you will get some

really good correction. I worried and fretted for weeks before actually

got her helmet. I did not believe even for one minute that would

tolerate that helmet. The worry kept me up at night. was, and still is,

a very particular child - she wants things her way or no way at all. I was

prepared for some very, very rough times while she was wearing the helmet. I

worried for nothing. never cared for one minute and that is no

exaggeration! We literally put it on the first day and never had a moment of

trouble from that point forward. We had to take it off ocassionally when she

had a fever, but otherwise we never looked back!

I know that it is nearly impossible to believe that it will be that easy, but

it was for us! I'll be hoping that it will be the same way for you!! Keep us

posted. :-)

Marci, Thanks for writing. I keep hearing that baby's adjust quickly, but I just can't imagine it could be easy to sleep with one on your head all the time!

My son is getting a locally made helmet, which is much less expensive than many I've heard of. We got it through Children's Hospital in Boston, so hopefully they know what they are doing. How long was your daughter in the helmet?

Thanks again for writing...I'll look forward to hearing back from youl.

Thanks to everyone for your reassurance. We're from the Boston area and I'm wondering if anyone else is from this area. We did the casting at Children's hospital in Boston, and NOPCO is the company who makes the helmets. Does anyone know anything about them? I guess our helmets are much cheaper than the DOC bands...hopefully they work as well. I look forward to hearing from everyone and will keep you posted on how the fitting goes!

Hi Michele and welcome to the group! I'm so glad to hear that the

members here were able to reassure you. It really is quite amazing

how quickly kids adjust to their helmet or band. Neither one of my

twins had any trouble wearing their bands. We always say that its

harder on the parents than it actually is on the kids, and it really

is true. We've had quite a few members here use NOPCO in Boston.

Hopefully, one of those members will chime in and tell you about

their experience. Good luck to you and Riley, and again, welcome to

the group!

Oh don't worry!! 9 mos is still plenty young enough to receive great correciton from his helmet!! Do you know what type of helmet he's wearing? Is it a full helmet or a band?

How's he doing so far? Hope things are going well!

Hi again!

Yes, many people receive great results at later ages - treatment may last longer, but people do see results. I am sure others with first-hand experience will chime in, so I'll bud out!

Which helmet are you using? And how has your son adjusted so far?

Hi,

Welcome to the group!

My daughter wasn't banded until she was 11mths and one week old. She

was banded from July 2002 until May 2003. She received 90+ %

correction. She looks great!! Don't worry, you're doing the right

thing. Keep us posted on your son.

I have to agree with the other reply that you have..Kassidy was not

banded till a few days short of nine months and she had already had

some major growth spurts and I was skeptical that she would get any

major shange..that was in April..she just had her first birthday and

her head is at least 50% better than it was, and we are still in

treatment. She has another adjustment in a few weeks and hopefull

there will be more change. The biggest thing to think about is that

the change will not be as dramatic as it would have been at 5 months

or even at 7..but I have all the confidence that you will see

change, like we did..it's just a slower progression because the

child is older..

Good luck with it, and relax..before you know it, your

little " bandit " will be sporting a rounder head!
