25. Exposure to microwaves and other EMFs is known to cause calcium

influx and efflux into and out of cells. This is also a problem for

people with CFS/ME:

" " " Moreover, Nair14 and Cleary8 have reported, that the flux of

positively charged sodium, calcium and potassium ions across cell

membrane can also be affected by radio-frequency exposure, over a

wide range of frequencies (27 MHz to 10 GHz).....In vitro and in

vivo studies15 have showed that magnetic fields including those in

the extremely low frequency regions affect cell membrane functions,

particularly the movement of calcium....Numerous studies showed that

MF exerted a preponderate controlling influence on the flux of

positively charged sodium, calcium and potassium ions across cell

membranes8,14. The most evident effects induced by magnetic waves

are the mobilization of intracellular calcium and occasionally

morphological changes, although cell signals when present are

extremely variable29-31. Likewise, Walleczek et al.32 reported an

increase in calcium influx into human Jurkat T cells after two

minute exposure to 60Hz, 2mT EMFs. Interestingly, the present

investigations demonstrated that membrane permeability for calcium

and iron was affected by MF. The evidence that MF acts to modulate

mineral permeability raises the question of how the MF regulate

heavy metals (cadmium) response to different waves. " " "

" " " The mobilization of cellular calcium ion (Ca2+ ) by

electromagnetic radiation, or other stimuli, is an important

biological response in the regulation of cellular activities....A

common finding is that calcium ion concentrations and Ca-dependent

cellular processes are affected by EM fields. While the data on

calcium efflux is equivocal, it cannot be ignored that independent

research groups have reported an increase in 45Ca2+ efflux from brain

tissue exposed to low levels of microwave or RF radiation, usually

modulated around 16 Hz. The positive effects were supported by a

further report of altered calcium ion efflux in human neuroblastoma

cells exposed to 915 MHz modulated at 16 Hz. As the effective SAR in

all of these studies was below 0.05 W/kg this suggests that a non-

thermal mechanism of interaction exists that depends on the extremely

low frequency modulation component. The efflux assay system requires

further research which may yield useful information in determining

the means by which EMR exposure conditions can sensitise and affect

cell membrane responses. " " "

" " " OPs do much of their damage by disrupting intracellular signalling

and I consider this to be a major feature of CFS. The starting point

for this is the calcium channel in cells and the raising of

intracellular Ca levels- which enhance levels of PKA and Calmodulin

kinase II for example. Some of my first investigations in my own case

were into intracellular ions and I found considerable abnormality in

red and white cells. Lymphocyte Ca was way above reference; RBC Ca

and Na were right at the top of the reference with deficient K and Mg

levels.

Neuronal and endothelial NOS produce NO in response to increases in

intracellular Ca which leads to increase in calmodulin which binds to

NOS. " " "

" " " There is some evidence for increased intracellular calcium levels

in CFS patients. Decreased serum calcium levels were associated with

poor NK cell function and increased RNase L fragmentation in CFS

patients. That they did not display the increased serum potassium

levels expected in a calcium channelopathy, however, cast doubt on

whether the increased calcium levels were due to a channelopathy. " " "

" " " The possible connection between EMFs, calcium ions and immune

system function was summarised by Cherry:

" ELF and RF/MW, modulated at ELF frequencies, change the oscillation

frequency and amplitude [of calcium ion signalling] and change the

influx and efflux of calcium ions in and around the cell membrane.

The changing oscillation frequency and amplitude is related to the

immune response of the cell and shows that the oscillating applied

field produces an antibody-like reaction as though the cell has been

attacked. The influx and efflux changes relate to the signal

transduction pathway in which calcium ions participate. This is one

of the biochemical pathways which regulate cell behaviour. This is

altered by the applied oscillating electromagnetic field. Since

signal transduction controls cell division, cell differentiation and

cell proliferation, this EMR-induced alteration to signal

transduction has the strong potential to participate in tumour

formation or promotion. Alteration of T-lymphocytes and other immune

system factors suggests that EMR exposure causes immunosuppression,

partially through induced calcium ion efflux. " 30

Changes in cellular calcium flow are known to stimulate a group of

enzymes called protein kinases, which play an important role in

regulating several cellular functions. Two recent studies found

evidence that inside cells, EMFs can activate certain signalling

pathways; for example, protein kinase activity has been associated

with cancer. Specifically these research groups discovered that the

products of a particular class of oncogenes, Src tyrosine kinases,

are rapidly activated by EMF exposure. The functions of other key

cellular elements facilitating the cancer-promoting function of these

tyrosine kinases also seem to be amplified five- to ten-fold. In

addition, the results of these studies demonstrate that EMFs may

alter biochemical events in the immune system that determine our

susceptibility to infections31. " " "
