Guest guest
Helen-- No way!! I live in Milford!! What a small world. I would be interested in knowing who your doctor and PT are. In about two weeks Dan and I have to make a decision about the helmet. We've already pretty much decided to do it though. We have some guilt about not trying aggressive repositioning earlier - but we didn't know. We have another daughter Regan, who is 5, so our kids are definitely compatible! Let me know when gets her helmet, or before hand! I'd love to meet up with you somewhere.
Guest guest
Wow! I can't believe we live so close. I would love to get together and chat. The pediatrician that first diagnosed is Dr. Segaloff. He works out ot the Providence Medical Center in Novi on Beck Rd. and Grand River. At about 2 1/2 months at 's check-up he mentioned the flat spot on the back right side of her head. He told me to switch her to the other end of the crib so that she was lying on the other side. He told me we would look at her head at her next check up. I must admit that I did notice a flat spot on her head, but I didn't think that it was that noticable. At 4 1/2 months the pediatrician looked at her head again and told me that he felt that the flat spot was about the same and that he would like for me to get a second opinion. He also tried to turn her head both ways while she was lying flat on her back. She totally freaked out and started screaming. He wasn't sure if she was upset because it hurt or she was just resisting him. He recommended that she see a physical therapist for her neck and head. The physical therapist also works out of the same Providence Medical Center in Novi. Her name is (I am not sure of her last name). After she evaluated her she told me she had torticollis (shortening of the left neck muscles). She felt that this probably happened prenatally when didn't have much room to move around and her neck muscles were not in use. When she was born she favored her right side when turning her head and sleeping. That is why her flat spot is on the right side. She recommended a helmet. She told us to think about it for a few weeks. She shared with us some other repostioning techniques to try. She felt that these techniques could help, but by doing only this it probably would be to late to achieve a well-rounded head. She felt the helmet would to a quicker and more efficient job (95% or better). My husband and I talked about what to do at great lengths. We finally decided that it would not hurt her in any way and that she is to young to ever remember this small part of her life. We felt that she would eventually benefit from this. We just felt that if there was something we could do to help her in anyway that we were willing to give it a shot. I must tell you I also felt guilty at first about the repositioning. I did what the doctor told me to do and changed her sleeping position to the other side of the bed. But, I really didn't know to do anything else. I guess I just didn't realize that I could have been doing more. It wasn't until I met with the physical therapist that she told me to keep her off her back as much as possible. She even suggested since she was already turning over to sleep her on her side. I started doing more at that point but, I think it was already too late. I think we are making the right decision about the helmet because all the research shows that they really can help. Now that we have the information I feel that we can help our child. How are you feeling about your decision? Have you made up your mind for sure? It helps to know that there are other people going through the same thing. I feel like I have rambled on and on and on. I would like to know more about your daughter's situation if you would like to share. If you are serious about meeting please let me know. I would love to be able to chat more. I usually don't get to check my mail until about 11:00(after everyone is sleeping!). So sorry I didn't reply sooner. Talk with you soon! --- DKDennist@... wrote: > Helen-- > > No way!!
