That's pointing, a very LOVELY, but typical skill. There are three or four books out on teaching babies sign and you can find them at and Noble or any good bookstore, including amazon.com. Guest guest
My granddaughter was born Jan. 26th, this year. Her head was very swollen at birth and they had to use suction to deliver her. Her head went back to normal shape sort of after a few days. But I have always thought that her head looked very flat and coned out in the back somewhat. The doctor measured her head at her 6 wks check up and was mildly concerned but didn't say why, just that they would check it again next visit. Today, I was holding her and I noticed something that has not been there before. There is a distinct line running over the top of her head from one ear to the other. None of my three children ever had this since they all slept on their tummies I guess. I called my daughter and asked her if she had noticed it and she said yes, that she had noticed it a couple days ago for the first time, a dark purple line running from one ear to the other. Other than the flatness of the top of her head, she doesn't seem to fit any of the descriptions I've found. My question is how old does this start appearing and is it something to be concerned about or do they outgrow it? Liz Mason

Guest guest
I would definitely take her back to the doctor or try to get in with a neurologist or neurosurgeon or someone that will listen. Even if it is nothing, the visit will be worth the piece of mind. My 3 1/2 month old son also has the line running over the top of his head and has a moderate to severe case of plagiocephaly and we are moving to a helmet soon. , mom to Regan (5) and (3 1/2 months, helmet coming) - In Plagiocephaly@y..., " sassymynx " <sassymynx@y...> wrote: > My granddaughter was born Jan. 26th, this year. Guest guest
Hi Liz: Welcome to our group. I would highly recommend you have your granddaugter taken back to her pediatrician to have the purple line you are describing re-evaluated asap. My daughter never had any lines on her head so I can't offer any personal experience with that. You also said your granddaughter's head is flat on top? I cannot recall ever hearing of a baby with a flat area on the top of their head. What were her head measurements at her 6 wk check up?? You said her Dr. was concerned - was her head circumference too low or high? I am really sorry I can't offer much good advice - but I really suggest taking her back to her pediatrician and going from there. He should then refer your granddaughter to a pediatric neuroseurgeon or another specialist. Please, let us know whatever you might find out. Best of luck. Guest guest
Liz, Welcome to the group and congrats on your new grandbaby. Unfortunately I don't have any good suggestions for you because this is a new one to me. Most babies with plagiocephaly have the flatness in the back or on one side - I haven't really heard of the flatness being on top. The purple line is another one that I haven't really heard of. I would highly recommend that your daughter take the baby back in for an evaluation and explanation of the purple line and I would also suggest that she press the ped for why he/she is concerned with the head circumference. If your daughter is not satisfied with the explanation she is given then she should insist on a referral to a neurosurgeon. Good luck and let us know what you find out!
