Guest guest
http://www.cranialtech.com/about/index.html Above is the website for cranial technologies. Please dont put your childs head in the helmet anymore because the cone shape will be very hard to correct. It shouldent do that. This sounds like someone not knowing what there doing. Cranial tech are the makers of the DOC band and will be able to help you. We used them 2 yrs ago and in the 2 yrs I've been intrested in this I've never heard any bad things like what your going through. I think I've heard of the Star doing this to 3 kids on these boards. Guest guest
Reply from: Carol 03/12/2002 Whenever you have questions with a product and treatment the first thing to do is talk with the therapist/orthotist etc. who is providing the care. I think you have mentioned you have done this. At that point, if you are not fully confident in the treatment your child is receiving it is very important to return to the physician who referred you for treatment regardless of what product you are using. The physician is the person who is ultimately responsible for the care of your child. He/She should be well versed in what the product can and should be doing for your child. Guest guest
The problem is that our pediatric neurosurgeon is in another city, and it usually takes in excess of a month to get an appointment with him. Plus I don't really think this is his fault, or that there's anything he can do--all he did was say yes, your son has brachycephaly, here is a prescription for a band to get it corrected. I'm not sure who is at fault--the orthotist or Orthomerica the maker of mthe STARband--or if it is something that happened because of my son's original head shape. We have been seen every week for adjustments, and we have done everything we are supposed to do (he wears the band for 23 hours a day). There have been no problems with pressure spots. I don't want to take the band off of him because then the slight rounding we have accomplished will get squished flat again. > > My son was banded with the STARband on 1/28, so it's been about 6 > > weeks now. Guest guest
Chris: Oh, I am SO sorry to hear of the troubles your son is having in his STARband. You should definitely be seeing improvements at the 6 wks mark in his band. My daughter also had a bad STARband experience, she wore hers nearly 3 mos & the only thing the STARband did was flatten some of what was her good side of her head a bit. My hospital also offered to re-cast Abby for a new band, I think that was going to be at no charge to me, BUT at that point, there was NO way I was going to let them touch my daughter's head any more. So if you do decide to let them re-cast Asher, it should definitely be at no charge to you. I have heard of the STARband causing at lease one other child's head to grow upward into a cone shape. This was because the hole in the band was too small & the band pressures were incorrect, which caused the head to grow upward. I have also considered malpractice with my daughter's band STARband experience, we still consider it but I'm not a suing type of person so doubt I will ever sue. I would suggest keeping Asher out of his band. Your orthotist does have good experience, that's good, perhaps the band was molded incorrectly at Orthomerica's home office??????? I am really sorry you're having these problems, I know all too well how you're feeling right now. Feel free to email me with any of your questions personally if you'd like dj2kirby@... Guest guest
It sounds to me like you should give this a little more time. I know you are worried, but your orthotist seems to be concerned about the problem - which is terrific!! If you see that things are not improving/worsening before your next appointment, don't be afraid to call and see if you can get in earlier. If your ortho feels a new band should be made, take it as a good sign. If you are not comfortable with your ortho, then maybe it's time to seek another opinion from a different provider (Cranial Tech, perhaps??). Mommy instincts are rarely wrong! Please keep us updated, OK! Kendra Re: Cone head The problem is that our pediatric neurosurgeon is in another city, and it usually takes in excess of a month to get an appointment with him. Guest guest
I'm sorry to hear that you are having a tough time with your son's band. However, I think its great that your ortho responded to your concerns right away and contacted Orthomerica for you instead of just toying around with the band making matters worse. I would give this latest adjustment a little bit of time to see if this fixes the problem. If it doesn't and your son is casted for a second band, your insurance should cover it since it is continuing treatment. I wish you and your son luck, please keep us updated! Guest guest
Dianne: Like Marci mentioned, that has been discussed in here on a few other occasions. is in a DOCband right? You might need an adjustment or even a 2nd band already, he's been in it about 2 mos now right? Give CT a call & I'm sure they'll see you ASAP. You can compare his head shape now to his beginning head mold, that will tell you a lot! Let us know whatever you find out. Guest guest
Dianne: Just wondering if you talked to or were able to get in to see your orthotist to have 's head looked at? If so, what they'd suggest? I originally thought was in a DOCband, but it's a Boston area helmet right? Nopco? Please let us know! Hope all is ok.
