Guest guest
I probably felt the same way you did 2 months ago. Especially since one of the docs kept telling me that all of the information about the need for helmets before age one was coming from the " advertising campaign by the people. " My son Dane (5 months)has been in a DOC Band for 2 weeks. I cannot believe how quickly his head is shaping. We tried repositioning for 3 months. We did have a bit of success but then the progress stagnated in January. It is worth every penny. We would have been willing to pay quite a bit more than we did to correct the problem. My husband said if we needed to refinance the house to get his head fix we would. Thank goodness we didn't have to do that! The DOC Band definetly works. It is worth every penny. Guest guest
Sorry about reply to my own reply! I just noticed the typos (duh!). I have been up all week with kids who have croup and my brain is a bit fried. Here is what I was trying to say: The ped told me when Dane was first diagnosed with plagio that he doesn't believe in helmets prior to 9-12 months. He said the " helmet people " adverised the need for them beforehand to frighten parents and make money. So, I felt the way you do about being taken advantage of. I thank God we decided to pursue it before the time he recommended (we later saw another doc in the practice). After seeing the results in just 2 weeks, I have done a 180 degree turn. It is quite amazing how well it is working. Yes, it is expensive, but in Dane's case, we will get every penny's worth. Sorry for the messy message before! Guest guest
Hi Marie: I believe this is your first post, so I'd like to welcome you to our group! We'd all love to hear more of your daughter's plagio story if you'd like to share it with us all! Are you looking into getting your daughter a DOCband made by Cranial Technologies?? That's what I am assuming based on the cost you have mentioned. I had the same opinion that you currently have about 18 mos ago. I couldn't believe the cost of these bands! I also thought these companies were taking advantage of us parents in a difficult situation. BUT, my opinion quickly changed. My daughter rec'd her DOCband when she was 11.5 mos old. She had severe plagiocephaly. The cost of the band was a lot yes, but the benefits we rec'd from the band (a rounder head) are invaluable. I cannot say enough good things about Cranial Technologies and their entire staff. They spend several weeks of intense training of their physical/occupational therapists and/or orthotists before they allow them to treat a child with their DOCbands. They also spend years researching every aspect of plagiocephaly and their DOCband. Their bands work wonders. I really understand what you're saying about the cost. But from my personal experiences, it was anything but a rip off. All health care now a days is outrageous. Many of our group members had been denied coverage of their child's helmet/band. But many of our members have had their denial turned around and actually covered after several appeals. I really suggest fighting with your ins. company for all it's worth. On what terms are they denying coverage? What ins. company is it? Check out www.plagiocephaly.org then insurance issues for some help. Sorry I got so long winded there, woo! Welcome again & please share more of your daughter's story with us! Guest guest
Hi Marie and welcome to the group! How were you able to get a discount on your daughter's band? I only ask in case it might help other members get a break too. It sounds to me like you are getting a DOCband, they are considerably more expensive than a STARband or a locally made helmet. But that's because they have pioneered the way for these bands and were the first to be FDA approved. You might want to consider a STARband because they are very similar to the DOCband in the fact that both are of an active design, wheras locally made helmets are passive. STARbands also usually cost less money than the DOCbands. You can check out Orthomerica's webpage at http://www.orthomerica.com to find an ortho near you. Whichever company you do desice to go with, its important that you feel comfortable with your ortho and that s/he has experience. You can find a list of some questions you might want to as at http://www.plagiocephaly.org/support/questions.htm Again, welcome to the group and good luck!
