Guest guest
Denisha, I had to send my son off to daycare as well, and was worried to death. I wrote everything down on paper, talked to the director, talked to all his teachers, and made sure they understood how it worked!! Remind them, never pull the velcro, only fold over! I showed them how to take it on and off, only so they would understand it better, against the advice of CT- who thought this would have them taking it off all the time. Write down on paper the importance of what's happening. Sound very serious, talk about it everyday until you drill in into their heads!! Ask how he did all day with it on- see what their reaction is, ask them point blank, did he have it off at all? Let them also know that it is not hurting him, (after you've already gone through the checking of the red spots phase)- because they would tell me, oh, he was crying so I took it off- I made it clear to them that he cries without it on, so don't take it off- I never had a problem after that. I think the important thing is to talk with THIER boss, the director, and tell him/her the importance of the band and what you expect- if she's a good boss (and afraid of liability!) she'll make sure what you've talked about is followed. Good luck! ' Mom (tort resolved, DOC grad)
Guest guest
Denisha, We remember the smelly head well!! We thought it smelled like dirty sweatsocks!! I think that the smell is the worst in the beginning because they are sweating more as they adjust to the helmet. We used 91% alcohol on a paper towel and then on a toothbrush to really scrub the inside. We would also let it dry in the sunny window once it got cold. We also found that when we gave Adam a bath, we would wash his hair first and leave the shampoo on the whole bath, rinsing his hair last. Hope that helps. I am cleaning the band with rubbing alcohol and scrubbing her head and it's not working. Any suggestions? Mikey had problems with a stinky helmet as well. One thing our orthotist recommended was to sprinkle cornstarch baby powder inside and then (gently) tap it on the counter to get the excess out. He also wears a stocking cap over his head which cuts down on the sweating. Hope that helps. She started back to daycare today and I could have screamed, I told them what ever you do, don't take her band off and if it gets uneven and they have to re-adjust it, never pull the latch tight. They did and when I picked her up one side was extremely tight and it took 3 hours for the red spot to go away. I'm sorry to hear that your daycare wasn't too sensitive about the helmet. One thing I did was get a copy of all the literature and give it to my day care, emphasizing that we would be partners in this endeavor. I showed her how to take the helmet off and how to put it on. I also stressed that she must never take the helmet off when he's fussing- calm him down first and then remove it if needed. That was in the early days when he wore it in increasing increments... Anyway, I hope you have better luck today. Debi and Mikey (STARBand 11/29/01) Tomorrow's his 1st BIRTHDAY!!
