Riley's Helmet adjustment

Hi Everyone,

Riley had his first helmet adjustment yesterday at the NOPCO in Burlington and I can't be happier with the orthotist and the progress he's made so far. The orthotist seemed so knowledgable and really took the time to explain everything to me. He also told me that the only time he's ever seen the helmet not work was in a baby 12 months old with a 36mm discrepancy. His pediatrician kept saying it would round out on its own, so by the time he started the helmet it was too late...his head growth had stopped and his head hardened so he had to have surgery. I am sooo thankful we are in the helmet while it can still do some work!!!

On another subject, I'm so frustrated with my son's tort...we're stretching him religiously a few times a day, and some days he seems fine, but others it is worse!! It is a relief that I don't need to constantly change his sleep position when I see him on his left side, now that he's in a helmet, but I worry that once the helmet is off his head will reflatten on the left side if he doesn't start repositioning himself! Any words of encouragement or reassurance would be appreciated. Does the tort ever fully go away or will he always tilt his head a little when tired or sick? Will he always prefer to sleep on his left side? Unfortunately, his good days are always the days the PT sees him, so he thinks he's making great progress!

There is always something new to worry about!

Thanks,

Michele (son Riley born 6/37/01, helmet 3/08/02)

Im glad to here your sons helmet adjustment went well. I am glad you

are happy with the orthotist. I too am very thankful to have Mya in

a band at 8 months. At the end of your post you wrote date of your

sons birth as June 37, 01 I was just wondering if you meant June 27.

I was just curious because Mya was born on June 27, 2001 and she got

her band on March 6.

ANyway Im not to sure about if the tort ever fully goes away. Ive

wondered the same thing myself. Myas tort seems way better then it

was but I feel we are stuck in a slump and she has almost full range

of motion but cant quite get there all the way. ANd her pt hasnt seen

her since January because she thought she was doing so well that all

she would need is the exercises from me. SO we go back on APril 8.

But I do wonder if it ever will go away.

ANd I dont think that the head can get flat again. I guess it would

be possible. Anything is possible but I really doubt it would flatten

again.

SOrry I guess I wasnt much help. I am sure there are many more people

that will reply with much more knowledge then me. I am still new to

all of this and still learning.

GOod luck

Michele:

I am glad you are so happy with Riley's orthotist. He sounds very

educated & experienced, that's the key to success :). You've seen

improvement already too? That's terrific!!

My daughter thankfully did not have tort., so I can't offer any words

of encouragement there, but many others have. I'm sure it's

extremely frustrating at times. Hang in there!

That's too bad about the other baby who your orthotist was telling

you about. My daugther didn't begin her DOC treatment til she was

11.5 mos old with severe plagio, we were fortunate to still get good

improvement in 4.5 mos time.

Good luck with the tort!

Hi Christie,

Oops! I meant June 27. That's so funny, because Riley got his helmet just 2 days after Mya (what a pretty name). Maybe they are destined for each other!:)

I'm glad to hear that someone else feels like the tort comes and goes. We cut our pt down to twice a month because it seemed so much better, but then it seems to come back with a vengeance. Someone else just wrote that it can get worse again when they are sick, teething or when they are learning something new. At this age, Mya is probably learning tons of new stuff, so maybe that has something to do with it. I sometimes feel like its a matter of Riley noticing he needs to keep his head straight, but its hard to tell a 9 month old that! I also sometimes wonder if the weight of the helmet has anything to do with it.

Do you have a therapy ball? That's something riley loves (he hates his stretches), and by sitting him on it and rolling the ball slowly from side to side he rights his head himself...that may be something to try. I got mine online, about $25, but well worth it. If you're interested I can give you the email address ( I don't have it next to me right now).

Take care!

Michele,

It's great that Riley is making so much progress with her helmet. Sorry to

hear that the tort issues are still troubling her. didn't have tort so

I don't have any good words of advice :-( Hang in there - from what I

understand it can be difficult to correct tort and it takes a lot of time!

cHRISTIE,

Oops, sorry for caps... Therapy balls... I've seen a version of them at Toys R Us... Ummm, if you have a Exercise store at your mall, they have them there... it's a huge blow up ball that you can use for various exercises. Alot of places carry them in their exercise sections. A sports place would have them also.

Hi Christi,

I have heard that the tort can cause motor delays, though with all the pt you'd think they'd be okay. Riley did not roll over both ways until 8 months, and let me tell you, I was getting very stressed about it. Its so hard not to compare babies! But I think they do develop in their own time...soon enough it will all even out (hopefully)! Riley is my first, which makes me a little more anxious, I think. I went to Gymboree for the first time yesterday, a little nervous with Riley in his helmet, and the first woman I saw has a 2 year old son who had tort and plagio!! He wore a helmet for 6 months and his head looked perfectly round! He also had no tilt that I could see. She said she felt like the stretches and exercises were tough because you feel like you can't just enjoy your baby...I totally relate to that. I feel like Riley's every waking moment is spent stretching (which he hates...squeals like you wouldn't believe) or doing some sort of exercise. Its like my playing with him always has an ulterior motive! He does love the therapy ball, so it would be worth it to try with Mya. The web address is www.theraproducts.com and it's listed under Gross Motor as "Inflatable Therapy Ball". My pt recommended the 65cm green ball because it will be big enough to last a while (ie she won't grow out of it). I sit Riley on top facing the TV (so he has something to look at) and roll the ball slowly from side to side. That way he rights his head, and doesn't even realize he's doing exercises! Its also great for tummy time on the ball, reaching against gravity, lots of stuff. I'm sure your pt will be able to give you some great ideas.

With 2 older kids, the tort must put you over the edge! I just can't wait until he sits with his head straight and I don't have to worry about it anymore!! Is your pt through Early Intervention? I'd suggest staying with the pt at least one or two times a month just as a security blanket...so when Mya regresses you'll know the pt is still around keeping an eye on you guys:)

By the way, Riley was 3 weeks early...and still not crawling. Where are you from? The baby from your church must be a pretty quick study because I don't know any 8 month olds who crawl (though I guess they're 9 months now, there goes that theory). Anyway, one thing I learned as a teacher ( I taught 4th grade) is that being an early learner has nothing to do with success later on. Lots of early readers end up struggling in the upper grades and lots of late readers end up in advanced classes later on. So I keep telling myself it must be the same with Gross Motor Skills. We just need to remind ourselves that we are doing what is best for our children by doing the pt and wearing the helmets. Its tough now, but will be worth it later on (I hope).

Sorry to ramble, but thanks for listening! Good luck and keep me posted!

That was funny about them being destined for each other . You never know :-)In the other post I said that Mya is definetly trying to learn new things she is moving around alot although shes not crawling or anything yet. Which I have wondered if her motor delay has anything to do with her tort and or plagio. I just dont know. I mean she just started sitting unsupported. SHe does roll a lot but she didnt do that untill she was almost 7 months old. She was born premature 4 weeks but there is a baby at my church who was born 5 weeks premature and they were born 1 day apart and he is crawling and pulling up on everything. I know you arent supposed to compare babies and that all babies develop differently but I just wonder if the tort/plagio has anything to do with it.We dont have a therapy ball I dont think Ive even ever heard of it. If you could Id like the address. Im hoping at Myas pt appointment on the 8th she will see what I see. Mya hates her streches and I hate doing them too but I know they are whats good for her in the long run. I just hope that her tort can be resolved and that it will stay gone. Hi Christi,

They really all do develop at their own pace. Maybe Mya's siblings do so much for her that she sees no need to move around. My sisters third didn't walk until 16 months, and we think its because her big brother and sister were always doing things for her...babies are smart that way! That's so funny that Mya is playing patty cake and peekaboo...so is Riley, and started a while ago. They are probably both geniouses and will meet in 18 years on a full scholarship to Harvard!!! All our worry will seem so trivial then. I'm glad you have an Early Intervention pt because I think it really makes a difference if you have someone who specializes in babies.

The thing that really gets me is that I have a good friend who's daughter was born January 2001 who had tort/plagio. I had never heard about it until then. When she saw my baby, she kept saying, "Be sure his head is turning both ways" etc. etc. But I just didn't see it until he was trying to sit on his own (around 6 months). He has low muscle tone, so it was a long time until he even held his head up, and then when he did, it was crooked!! He was already in pt (for the low muscle tone) so we added the stretches for the tort no problem. So by the time we tried repositioning, it was way too late. I noticed the flatness, and that he always turned left, but even with my friend warning me, I kept thinking it was just going to work itself out. It wasn't until he was in the doctors for an ear infection (one of many) that the ped. said his head was "funny looking" and we should have it checked out. That was like a punch in the stomach. But I'm very thankful we were able to be seen quickly and have him in the helmet by 8 months. I, too, dream of the day he has a round head and can hold his head up straight!!

My husband was born in Fort Bragg, North Carolina...is that near you? His father was military.

Well, hang in there. I'll think of you every time Riley is screaming because he doesn't want to stretch!! At least I know I'm not alone... Give Mya an extra special 9month birthday hug!

Talk to you soon, Michele mom to Riley 9months today--Helmet 3/8/02

CMZ1242 <cmz1242@...> wrote: MicheleThanks for the therapy ball info. I will definetly check into that. Well that makes me feel better that Riley isnt crawling yet either and that he didnt roll over till later either. I also have my other two children to compare Mya to and it drives me insane because both of them rolled over by 4 months and were sitting up unsupported at 6 months and crawling soon after that. ANd they were almost identical in motor development. But Mya is completely different. She is way behind in the rolling and sitting and crawling yet she can play patty cake and peek a boo clapping her own hands when I sing and pulling the cover up over her face and yanking it down quickly waiting for me to say peek a boo and then squeels all happily and she can wave bye bye. ANd both and CHloe never did any of that till later. So I guess they all develop differently. And maybe Myas just perfectly happy and content to stay put and is in no hurry to get up and get going. WHo knows as you can see I try to annalyze the situation way too much. By the way we live near fayetteville , NC.I cant imagine Mya being my first and having all of this hit me. But then again I cant beleive I went all the way till my 3rd child to even hear of tort or plagio! Thats really a shame. I wish I wouldve been more aware. I had no idea why she wouldnt turn her head in the other direction when she was just a month old or why she wouldnt lay flat she had to be in her car seat or she would scream. I later found out that it was hurting her neck. I just looked at her flat side and just thought oh no big deal Im sure it will round on its own cause thats what People told me. Im just so thankful a doc at her 4 month visit sent me to see a specialist because if she hadnt I think I still wouldve just said oh Im sure it will get better. I just didnt realize that this was such a big problem. Its great you found someone at gymboree who knew what you were going through. I was so self concsious at first with myas band but now I have found myself forgetting she even has it and then when some one asks me about it Im like oh yeah. So that has brought some relief so I am not constantly stressing when I go out.I understand what you mean about having an ulterior motive when you want to play with him. Cause I feel like that with Mya I fel like everytime I go to play with her shes thinking oh no shes going to hurt my neck again. And I hate feeling like that. She screams something awful everytime we do the excercises and I just feel so bad. We are military so our pt is at the army hospital. But Mya also has a Early intervention specialist at the army hospital that is there at every pt appointment. I am going to tell them we need to see them more often untill this is completly resolved. I am so looking forward to the day when all of this is behind us and Mya has a nice round head and keeps her head straight not tilted and has full range of motion. That will be a great day. Untill then I just need to take it one day at a time and focus on the great blessings I have in my life. CHloe and Mya!WEll now Im rambling again. :-)Christi mom to Mya> > > > > > Hi Everyone,> > > > > > Riley had his first helmet adjustment yesterday at the NOPCO in > > Burlington and I can't be happier with the orthotist and the > progress > > he's made so far. e~ Don't get discouraged. We felt that way with Grace and after lots of PT at home and with a PT one night I went in there and there she was sleeping with with her head straight! Occassionally she still creeps it back to the side but 95% of the time she sleeps straight. I always would prop things under her one side until she rolled her head to the center. Sometimes I would prop things under both sides and the back just to get it roll to the center. And as far as the PT goes you just have to keep going. My husband works Grace every night for 45-60 min doing all sorts of things that the PT has taught us. And I try to do little exercises here and there during the day. The therapy ball worked really well for us when the PT showed us how to use it. Tummy time also. It seems like you will never see improvment somedays and then all of a sudden BOOM you see that it is clicking in their tiny heads that they can do this. Our PT explained that it is just like an adult with a really stiff neck only we know what to do and how to move the muscle. Babies don't know they just do what is comfortable. But once Graces muscle started to loosen and with PT her ROM and tilt improved and she realized the ways she could move that head and neck she loves it. It is still ongoing but we will never give up! Good luck~ and Grace

Hi! My son, Josh is on his 3rd week with the helmet. He is almost 6 months

old. We went to the Children's hospital in Omaha, NE to get it. It was

quite the ordeal as you can imagine, but being in the hospital made me

thankful that Josh was only there for cosmetic reasons.

I can totally relate to what Michele & Christy are saying in the email

below. Josh is my first child and I just feel guilty or that I have wronged

him in some way. I live for the break times to take off his helmet & I feel

like we are always doing his stretches. He constantly looks towards the

left & I can not get him to sleep looking to the right. He literally has

his head cranked to the left when he sleeps. Do you have any tips that I

can use to get him to sleep with his head the other way? I am so

discouraged by the stretching. But I guess I want instant success. I think

I was hoping a month was all Josh would have to wear the helmet. I must be

delusional. =)

Anyway, thanks for the information below. Maybe I should try the therapy

ball?

do everything for her. That is a very good point. That probably has

a lot to do with it because they are constantly catering to her every

need. ANytime she whines they are right there to calm her. Its so

cute but yet sooo annoying cause when they arent around and I want

her to sit and play by herself she no longer will do that she wants

me to entertain her which I loved to sit there all day and play with

her but.... LIFE calls and I have cleaning and other kids to deal

with.

Ft Bragg is very close to me. In fact both Mya and CHloe were born on

Ft Bragg at Womack and that is where Mya recieves her pt. My husband

is stationed on Ft Bragg right now and has been for about 8 years

now. Where did you say you were? If you told me I have such a bad

memory. Tomorrow I go for Mya's DOC band adjustment. Not looking

forward to the drive but I am looking forward to comparing her head

to the mold again!

Talk to you later

Christi mom to Mya DOCband 3/6/02

By the way feel free to email me at my regular email address
