Guest guest
Hi Grandma!! Congratulations on your two baby boy grandsons!! What a great Mom you are to your daughter/son? to actively search on the web!! I wanted to let you know that each state has (or is supposed to have) a program called Early Intervention- do a search for this program and see if you can find it in your state. They offer free physical therapy to children birth to 3, if they have a 20% delay in milestones for torticollis. They assess the child for a few hours and decide if you are eligible. They have therapists that will come to the house to help you. I encourage you to look into this because therapists will have more tips than you can imagine and can show you the right and wrong ways to do it. I personally feel that we are our children's best therapist, and gentle is key, but the stretching will not be a piece of cake and it must be done daily- so the more help the better. Working on the tort will help improve the plagio- although I feel it will not " fix " what has already been done, merely prevent it from worsening if you can get them to start favoring the other side. Since your grandson was in NICU, perhaps it will resolve much quicker since this was more of a positioning problem at the hospital. I think another mom here can talk with you more about her situation as I recall it was very similar. As far as the helmet goes, I would ask the program or search the web about covering it, but I really don't know on that one. I do know that some parents have had golf tournaments or auctions to raise money. I think this is a great idea, and so many people will spawn off educated about plagio. Any kind of fundraiser would work, bowling tournament, horseshoe, tennis, bake-off- perhaps even churches would be interested in helping. Good luck to you and please keep us updated! Congrats on your twin grandsons! I am in Kansas but have not had any experience with Medicaid. I'm assuming you're in the Kansas City metro area?? The person to see is Dr. Singhal at Children's Mercy Hospital. It takes forever to get an appt so I'd start as soon as possible. is in the STAR Band, but I've met others in the area who have used the DOC Band. So there are different treatment options in KC. Good luck! Debi and (STARBand 11/29/01)
Guest guest
Hi and welcome to the group! We lived in Kansas when my son had his DOC band; we saw Dr. Witt at KUMC and he is WONDERFUL--very supportive and helpful. (I have also heard good things about Dr. Singhal at Mercy--noticed someone mentioned that). We got the DOC band from RDA (Rehab Designs of America) in KC. There are two people there who are great with the DOC band--Jan and Bob. Actually, I cannot say enough good things about anyone that we dealt with from start to finish with the band. I don't have any experience with Medicaid so I can't help you there, but if there is anything I can do, please feel free to email me at cwlkjbastian@... I would be happy to help. Good luck! Both are doing well now. The youngest, Dayton's head shape is fine. The oldest, Dakota, has had a flattened back right side of his head since birth. Noone even mentioned it in the NICU. We have tried positioning w/o much luck. Last night looking down on him, I noticed he has a large lump forming to the right side of his head, just above the ear. My daughter has taken him in to see his doctor several times, who says not to worry. Well, now I am. I have downloaded the exercises for torticollis as this is an issues with him as well. We will begin these. She will need to find a specialist. Now, the kicker is...She and the boys are on Medicaid. What are the chances the specialists, tests and helmet will be covered under that program? Any one currently treating in Kansas or Missouri. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Grandma of Twins.
