Guest guest
Hi Jan, Welcome to the group!! First let me say you are so lucky to start this early with talking to a Doctor- use this time to really dig into this and find out what you need to do. For some it has taken months to see Doctors, and I know we have some UK members that will share their experience and possibly direct you to Doctors they've used. Have you noticed if your daughter has problems turning in one direction? Ask your GP to check for torticollis, essentially the tightening of one side of the neck muscle. Often times when one side is favored, it is because they have a tight neck muscle that inhibits their ability to use both sides equally. Therefore, they are putting constant pressure on one side that in some cases leads to plagio (flatness). My son was dx at 8 weeks, and we were in physical therapy from 3 to 9 months. Also, he had the misaligned ears and we put him in the DOC band which can help realign the ears, with the most favorable outcome if started early! Repositioning can work too, but I found it rather difficult fighting the torticollis. You will get tons of great advice from experienced parents and from those going through the motions- I hope someone can post a link for the boppy pillow, and any repositioners (unfortunately I don't have them!). The fact that she is only 13 weeks puts you way ahead of the game to get good results! Please ask all the questions you have, this Board is very supportive and will help you in every way! In the meantime, keep repositioning off that flat spot! Good luck, please keep us posted. All the best, ' Mom (tort resolved, DOC grad)
Guest guest
Hi, my name is Jan and I have a 13 week old daughter, whom I believe has positional plagiocephaly. I noticed almost since birth that she preferred to sleep with her head to her right. Unfortunatley I did not realise that this could lead to a flat spot (well actually more than just a spot, its the whole side of her head, also her ear is now jutting out on that side) which she now most definately has. I am currently trying to re-position her when she sleeps but am finding this difficult. What I could really do with is some info from anyone in the UK as to what treatnment they have had/where etc. I have an appointment with my GP to discuss the problem but I am concerned he may fob me off with " she will grow out of it... " so I would like to be well informed before I see him if you see what I mean. Also has anyone found any of the 'sleep positioners'sold in the USA anywhere in the UK or had any success with anything to get their child to sleep with their head on the opposite side to the flat side. I have tried a rolled up towel under her shoulder but am worried about her being smothered by it. Looking forwrad to hearing from you. Many Thanks Jan
Guest guest
Jan, Welcome! I did see a sleep positioner for sale at Babies R Us and the outside of the box says " For the prevention of plagiocephaly or flathead in babies " . It is a mat with rolled sides and a cushy attached pillow. It sells for $15.99 Unfortunately I found this product all too late and it brought tears to my eyes when I saw it on the shelf because I thought how much easier this would have been on my little one (not to mention the pocketbook!) Our little Jessie is 12 mos. old and in a helmet now (our ped never diagnosed torticollis which lead to plagio) but at least Jessie is getting the help she needs now! I told the salesperson at Babies R Us that they should do an educational seminar on plagiocephaly for expectant and new parents; I think they would sell a lot of this product. They only had 3 on the shelf. Anyways, I would be glad to send one to you if you can't get them over there. My e-mail address is harmonyrain18@... Just let me know. Good luck with your doctor visit (make sure you ask him/her about torticollis (tightening of the neck muscles) which could be causing to keep her head to the right). I will keep you and your little one in my prayers. Theresa (mom to Jessie) DOC band 2-16-
Guest guest
Hi Jan and welcome! I see you have already gotten some really good replies so I will just some links for you for some repositioning aids that can be bought online. Here are the links that I have: Butterfly pillow: www.snuglbuds.com, Boppy pillow: www.onestepahead.com, Repositioning aid: www.safetsleep.com. I think that Dr. Blecher who has been referred to already is currently training another doctor to help out with treating plagio babies and making/adjusting bands so maybe there will be more help available in the UK soon! Good luck and let us know what you find out! Marci (Mom to ) Oklahoma
