Guest guest
Hi Kim, Don't beat yourself up! Your Docs are the ones to blame!! They are paid to know better!! All too often, both with plagio and tort, I have seen time and time again on both boards, a lack of direction from Doctors about this. It really angers me because they expect us to listen to them as if they are smart, and then when they let us down, we feel guilty for not knowing that they aren't so smart after all!! Kudos to you for being a great mom and really getting to the bottom of this- if you were not keenly aware of what's happening, you would not have pressed for pt after you were advised to do so. Your on the road to resolve, and you are able to share your story and educate others about the detour you were sent on, in hopes that maybe you can steer someone into an easier path- perhaps you have already helped someone out there by letting them know, Docs don't know everything, and do your own homework too. Hindsight is always 20/20- if you had known then what you know now, of course you would have continued with stretching. But you didn't know. Had you even heard of torticollis before was born? Probably not. And its no fault of yours for trusting a " professional " - we are paying them for something! We tried something similar to the splint, called the TOT collar- which worked the same way in trying to get them to know that midline is the normal posture. It didn't really work for us because he was already 10 mnths old, and it bothered him and he tried pulling it off (my ped was horrified with this, but she didn't recommend the DOC band either- so I didn't even consider her point). But, I can say that the time he did wear it, he would pull his head straight. If you have seen progress in the last 2 weeks, chances are, you will not need to go the surgery route. Most kids that have the surgery do not show any signs of improvement, or little to none. Even if surgery was necessary, I have seen stories from 2 moms that had their child have it (usually its only done about age 2), with great results. KKR's book also shows a pic pre-op and post-op that is amazing. Please ask any questions you may have, I would love to help if I can. Good luck to you, keep the faith, and turn that guilt into positive action aimed at finishing those stretches (ugghhh) everyday! Keep the faith, all will turn out well.
