Guest guest
Hi everyone - new to the group. My second son has plagiocephaly. I had Dylan early by emergency c-section (4weeks early my waters broke and i did not dilate as dylan was stuck in a funny postion so hence he was only 4pounds 15 oz) I noticed his head shaped at 3 months and i was living in the UK at the time so i saw my family doctor who said he did not think anything would be done as its cosmetic he got me an appointment with a consultant - this took 3 months. At that time i was currently moving to Canada. The English consultant said they did not do anything and it would right itself but could take up to 2 years (i was not convinced as Dylans ears were now misaligned badly.) So i was in Calgary,Canada 2 weeks and Dylan has a viral infection and i took him to a walk in clinic where a wonderful doctor said to me " have you had his head looked at " she got me into a specialist within a week and 2 weeks later Dylan had his DOC BAND. I noticed a BIG difference within 2 weeks. So he started the DOC BAND last OCTOBER and was in it for 3 and a quarter months. He is in a second DOC BAND i knew this from the beginning as i was told that Dylan was a very severe case and without the helment and normal growth he said Dylan would have been GROSSLY DEFORMED!! I am pleased to say the back of his head is rounding nicely and from his nose down his face is back in symmetry. He still has some bossing on his left forehead and his ears are still misaligned. He started his second BAND February just after his 1st birthday. Has anybody had their childrens ears go back?? I am obviously concerned about the ears i have been told not to expect 100% which ok i understand that but i think of the future silly things like will he need specially made sunglasses ect. I am so glad i found this web site as i feel i am not alone any more and i agree that parents should be told of this at birth. i felt so guilty as Dylan was proberly in his crib a bit more because of having my older son i was being careful with jealousy, i did not want him to see me holding the new baby all the time. Then again i don't know if it was him being stuck in a funny posistion inside me. i would love to hear some responses. many thanks kerry Mommy of Marcus - aged 3 and Dylan aged
Guest guest
Hi Kerry, Does the band seem really tight fitting around that part? Not sure if you were told this, but the strap should not be pulled tight, just folded over. I'm sure you already know this, but with all the differing info out there, just thought I'd mention it just in case. Perhaps you could email Carol kson of CT (any moderators have her addy?) and can answer this question about why a ridge would form there. Guest guest
Kerry, learned to walk at about the same time she got the helmet. Let me tell you that helmet was a real lifesaver in more ways then one! She was spared SO many head bumps and bruises because of her helmet! I got head butted a few times on accident and got a busted lip once - ouch! When was done with the helmet she would whack her head on something and get really, really mad that it hurt - she didn't know what that was all about - LOL!! Good luck with the haircut! Great that she has fixed the problem- I'm sure you'll be getting more sleep soon! Good luck and please keep us updated on his progress! Guest guest
Kerry, Sounds like a good report on the helmet - that's great! I'm impressed that your little one did so well for his haircut. We didn't take for a " big girl haircut " until this month and she was 26 months old! Marci (Mom to ) Oklahoma
Guest guest
Hi Marci Split lip ouch!!!that sounds painful. Well Dylan has just started pulling up at the furniture and to get down he just falls on his bum! The haircut went well he looks different again. He was more interested at looking at himself in the mirror. My 3 year old marcus was a fidget bum he would not sit still and told the hairdresser that cutting his hair hurt!!. He makes me laugh!! The hairdresser had alot of patience. Took DYlan for his bi-weekly check up and the OT pulled the helmet out to the side as i was concerned it was digging in. But everythings ok she said he's filling the helmet nicely. kind regards Kerry >From: marcisch@... >Reply-Plagiocephaly >Plagiocephaly >Subject: Re: Ear alignment >Date: Thu, 28 Mar 2002 10:38:52 EST > >Kerry, > > learned to walk at about the same time she got the helmet. Guest guest
Hi Dylan had his bi-weekly check up this morning and i mentioned it again and she used a blow torch to pull the side out and made it so it should not dig in as much. So hopefully this will be ok, apart from that she said he is filling the band nicely. So i will keep my eye on the ridge to see if it goes. Many thanks Kerry >From: rella1234@... >Reply-Plagiocephaly >Plagiocephaly >Subject: Re: Re: Ear alignment >Date: Thu, 28 Mar 2002 09:20:13 EST > >Hi Kerry, >Does the band seem really tight fitting around that part? Let me answer your question below, for what it's worth anyway! > Thus my question: as her head continues to round out, do the actual > ear holes on the skull move? How is this possible? **Ok, that's a darn good question, let me explain it to you as I've had it explained to me in the past.....as the head rounds out it simply pushes everything else back into it's place, Just like as her head was slowly flattening, it pushed things out of their normal positions, as the head slowly re-rounds, it will do the same, slowly push everthing back into it's correct locations. > If the 5mm difference remained for the rest of her life it would > really be no big deal. I'm sure you're the only one who is noticing Zoey's ear assymetry, it sounds to be quite minimal and I can't see it in any of her pictures. Guest guest
Thanks Debbie! Your explanation made sense to me. A 5mm difference looks pretty big on a tiny baby skull..but on a size 7 1/2 hat size person like me, it's completely insignificant. Zoey is such a side sleeper now that when you put her on the changing table when she's sleepy..she immediately rolls over on her side. I'd guess she spends less than 1 hour a day on her back now, so I only see her getting rounder and rounder. and now for something completely different.. My wife was saying that she wanted to start working out again..and I think I found the perfect class for her: http://www.punkrockaerobics.com Of course, she'd have to make a scary drive into the city..but it sounds way more fun than a normal aerobics class.
