Almost half a million tons each of carcinogens and of recognized developmental and reproductive toxicants were released and transferred by industrial facilities in Canada and the US in 2002. Among the released chemicals were lead, mercury, PCBs, dioxins and furans, phthalates and manganese, all substances of concern to children's health. Release amounts decreased from 1998 to 2002. Published by North American Commission for Environmental ation. Familial PBDEs In a study of one family, scientists found that the children had 2-15-fold higher levels than their parents of the six major PBDE congeners. The parent's levels were similar to the previously reported US median concentration, while the children were near the maximum. The children's levels were within the range that causes adverse effects in animals. The exposure level sufficient to cause adverse effects is comparable to recent estimates of the daily exposure of Americans and a thousand-fold lower than the no-effect level based on liver damage. The researchers propose that ubiquitous use of DHEP has contributed to widespread increases in immune diseases like atopic dermatitis.
