Guest guest
------- Forwarded message follows ------- PRESS- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 28th For more information: L. Barnett, 212-482-0204 NATIONAL US EPA AWARD for HEALTHY SCHOOLS NETWORK (Albany, New York, Washington, DC) Healthy Schools Network, Inc., a national environmental health research, education, and advocacy organization founded in upstate New York in 1995 has received a national Recognition Award for Children's Health Protection from the US EPA. This is the first year that EPA has given out the competitive national Award. " It is an honor to receive this Award and to have our issues recognized. We do this work for children, " said founder and Executive Director Barnett. Healthy Schools Network established a national Healthy Schools/Healthy Kids Clearinghouse in 1996 that has now assisted parents, personnel, and schools in every state with fact sheets, guides, and reports featuring practical, problem-solving advice on reducing risks to children's environmental health at school from hazards such as polluted air, renovation dust and fumes, toxic cleaning products, lead and pesticides, and molds. Noted EPA, " the success in raising awareness about children's environmental health is dependent upon the ongoing support of programs like the Clearinghouse. " EPA and other agencies have estimated that half of the nation's schools have poor environments that undermine the health and test scores. The organization has also researched and published peer-reviewed surveys and reports on school environments, such as Neglected Buildings, Damaged Health; Schools of Ground Zero; What Nurses Know: and, The Healthy and High Performance School. These have helped secure state and federal policy reforms and funds to address school environmental problems. Barnett has also chaired two US EPA work groups that studied school environments and how EPA could better address problems. Board Members and Adviser Also Honored In addition, Healthy Schools Network Board Members and Advisers also won EPA Awards this year. Awards went to Board Members Ramona Trovato, the founding and now former Director, US EPA Office of Children's Health Protection, Peggy Shepard, Executive Director, West Harlem Environmental Action, and Adviser Elise , Institute for Children's Environmental Health, Freeland, WA for her work on pollutants and learning disabilities.
