Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I appreciate your help with my daughter's school problems last year (Leigh). I wanted to give you all a quick update. I moved this summer out of the " evil " school district into one that had been recommended to me, buying a house in the district to make sure she could go to school there. When I called them, they said that they would not approve a transfer because of funding, but if we lived in the district they would help us. I met with Special Ed last Tuesday, had a full IEP review on Friday, and she started school Monday the 21st. They have already moved her up a grade to 8th grade art, and have her mentoring a 6th grader in math. They recognize she needs more challenge academically and fewer interactions with her peers (but still needs socialization skills) so she is in a computer based training that allows her to learn at her own pace with only a few kids and adults in the room and lots of flexibility for breaks and other needs. She attends gym and choir/theatrics with a full class. So far everyone has worked with us wonderfully, they seem to understand her and are working hard to give her a good start in seventh grade. I feel like it's a breath of fresh air. Since they have been putting attention to her SID, her ADHD symptoms have virtually disappeared. The other disorders except for paranoia seem vastly reduced. Wish me luck this year!! Jay in Colorado
Guest guest
HI Jay: Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful success with a new school. Your total commitment to your child, even buying a home in the right school district, reminds me so much of the incredible dedication to their kids that I noticed in OCD parents at the OCF Conference. Take care, aloha, Kathy (H) kathyh@... Guest guest
Jay, in Colorado What wonderful news about Leigh! I cant mention loud enough how student focused learning is the answer for our kids! This has been a big summer for Leigh: starting a new school, adolescence, new house, etc., and having the opportunities to explore who she is as a person. I'm sure she will make you so proud! take care, eh? wendy, in canada ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Guest guest
Gail, I am so sorry to hear that your daughter's school is doing this to her! How awful to play with a child this way. I surely hope you won't have to switch schools and they'll come around soon. -Jean > Despite very clear objectives and accomodations listed in 's > evaluation report, the school has not put ANY in place yet. Guest guest
Gail, what a frustrating situation for you and to be in. I can get so angry when the supposed " helpers " (schools, etc.) end up being our kids' biggest hurdles. A big part of me thinks, to hell with this school, but yet how unfair for to have put forth all the effort and patience in the testing and at school, only to have to face transferring or further foot-dragging to deny her the accomodations that she needs to succeed. I'm concerned that she will pick up on this and feel unwanted there, how can any student succeed under those circumstances?? I know this is a small comfort, but reading over time of your and 's struggle with this school, I have thought long and hard about my idea of enrolling Kellen in a private school. It seems to me, having the force of law behind accomodations in the public school system is an ace in the hole. Although I have learned through this list, there are still any number of ways the school can place obstacles in the path and confound an OCDer's learning experience. Since my daughter is a first-grader, we are just starting down this road. I always snap to when a post concerns problems with a school or educating our OCDers. Thanks to you and others who have posted their experiences, I have what I think is a healthy skepticism when it comes to dealing with teachers and the school. I want to believe they have my daughter's best interests at heart, but they will also have to show this in her day-to-day experiences there. I'm not exactly looking for trouble, but very alert to that possibility. (((hugs Gail))) Let us know which way things go. Guest guest
sorry you are having these problems - I have found that my kids schools' do very little about compliants of any kind-whether health, safety or scholarly issues. They are only concerned about the image and the money- Val > Hello Everyone, > Thought I would update everyone about our school situation.
