Guest guest
Dear Barb, The answer is yes. You may remember that in Arkansas they have had over the years quite a but of poisoned food from moldy peanuts and soybeans that was improperly processed. Here's what I find in my dictionary: Any of a group of related pentacyclic lactones produced by the moulds Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus and highly toxic to most animals, causing cancer and liver damage; any closely related synthetic compound. 1962 Toxicity assoc. Groundnuts (Agric. Res. Council Interdepartmental Working Party) 2 Aspergillus flavus..was shown to produce the toxic factor when grown on sterile, non-toxic nuts. In view of its origin, the toxic factor was given the name 'aflatoxin'. 1978 G. GREENE<http://dictionary.oed.com/help/bib/oed2-g2.html#g-greene> Human Factor III i. 102 Peanuts when they go bad produce a mould... The mould produces a group of highly toxic substances known collectively as aflatoxin. 1980 McGraw-Hill Yearbk. Sci. & Technol. 93/1 Foods are monitored routinely for aflatoxins.
