Guest guest
Hi Barb B again: This is Houston, we have 100 degree weather during Summer, 90+humidity and yes have two turbines; each turbine is rated for 600 square feet. Plus I have an electric power vent (this is new) with adjustable thermostat. My attic is so much cooler since I had this installed and my second floor is cooler these last few days even though it's getting hotter outside. I have a strange designed house; some attic space is not accessible, have different levels of my roof and home; for example home is basically two stories, yet master bedroom does not have anything on top of it other than an attic; to get to that section of attic we cut whole second story storage area and crawl through it. So I need lots of vents on roof to keep us cool, the attic cool. Indeed I have a lot of " holes " in my roof, counting the 20 air hawks, I'd guess around 30 holes or more plus a huge skylight, 52x52 " in bathroom. As the roofer explained it's not the holes that matter, but how these vents are installed and the type of nails used; the nails have to have a special little rubber gasket below the head to keep them from popping up. I inspect our attic monthly (all sections of it) with flashlight looking for " dark spots " , pour bleach (have to wear mask to do this) into drainlines of my two A/C systems in attic to keep drains open (that's another excellent source for water leaks); do this every month during Summer, every 2 months other seasons; climb up on the roof every so often making sure no nails popped up, checking flashing since we have such strange roof lines, clean out the gutters, wash off mildew and powerwash siding second floor, recaulk where necessary, check chimney for any leaks or cracks......grin not bad for a woman with Lupus, MCS and mold victim and I pray while up there for God's protection. Lol my neighbors don't know what to think about me; even the men won't go on their roofs....however if I want an safe home for myself then this is what I must do. Can't afford to hire people to do all these things for me so I pray and do it. Concerning plywood for your attic, you can purchase real wood, clean it yourself in the backyard (vinegar and peroxide works well, let dry in hot sun) and then apply a sealer like BIN and then put up there. If I'd need more walk-about-flooring I'd do same. lol steel would be nice up there: giggles. Finding decent roofer; ask many questions. Learned to ask right questions and if they give wrong answers or half answers or something silly like we've been in business for xxxx years and know what we are doing then I call someone else; plus referrals. It's difficult honestly and if they don't want to talk with woman and answer her educated questions I know I don't want them working for me. And they need to be honest, have insurance, written estimates, written guarantee. Sigh not a one will honor their warranty if any storm damage such as yearly in April we have serious hail storms; had one this year;have cosmetic damage on my shingles so my warranty is void from the roof we had installed only 4 years ago. All my neighbors have same issues; most just don't know until they have a leak and call the roofing company back for " warranty " repairs. You and I should be neighbors; we'd have fun working on our homes and inspecting them and learning from each other. Are you chemical sensitive as well having to use only non-toxic products in and around your home?
