One option is a company that makes cork floor coverings. They use only

water-based adhesives, no chemical fixatives to outgas later and no

oil-based finish. They are used to working with MCS folk and are sensitive

to their needs. They also have a variety of different looks (including a

faux marble) so they are attractive as well as somewhat soft and

sound-absorbing.

Unfortunately all I have at the moment is a name & city:

Infocork

River Edge, NJ

Someone in the Monmouth CFS Support Group may know more about them if any

one like that is out there - they displayed at the Oct 99 CFS Conf. in

Monmouth NJ.

I haven't looked myself but have you looked at allergy sites to see if

they sell area carpets that are easy to clean or similar?

Actually, I was pretty disgusted at the blatant deception carpet manufacturers

are using to

try to sell more carpets- they are denying that carpets cause problems, even

saying they

*help* allergic patients. So far, I haven't found an allergy site that

approaches the problem

of floor coverings, mostly just the new flooring products. I just started to

look, yesterday,

though.

How do you think I feel, my husband installs carpet and the only time I

get to go out is to go in the carpet truck since we lost car in last

moldy place. We have to eat, and he is too old to change

occupations.

if you have pergo installed, the good pergo has its own padding....connected to

the back of the flooring. i just had that done.

[] floor covering

I am hoping this topic hasn't come up lately, but here goes. I have to get rid

of the carpet,

and need something for padding. Since I have many allergies and some chemical

sensitivities, I don't know what to do. Anyone have ideas? I don't go out very

much (due to

health), but I thought maybe IKEA or Pier One might have something natural. I

am allergic

to most animal hair, too, so I can't have wool of any kind either.

I was hoping someone else might have seen or know of something.....Thanks.

My friend had it installed in her house. She and I are both MCS. I

waioted a few days before going in, but she claims she was ok with it.

Then again, it has sat in a hot Vegas warehouse so it could have

offgassed.

Then again....we all have different levels.

We installed pergo about two months ago in a bedroom that used to have

a rug in it. Pergo is made of part glue part cellulose materials. Thus,

it looks nice but I can't be in that room now for any length of time.

The underlay - thin styrofoam vapor barrier that came with it, is what

it sits on, like a floating jigsaw puzzle. Each month it is less

stinky but must air the room out daily and it isn't that great for MCS,

in my opinion. Tile seems best but then it must be glued and sealed and

that has its own set of problems.

Anyone have any comments on flooring? We are getting ready to do

another room in something...

I did pergo 6 years befroe my mcs, and its fine.

I did the basement in tile just a few months ago, replacing carpet. Its great,

but the dust while doing it was a problem. Used safe sealer.

ITS LIKE A PRESSED WOOD, BARB----BUT I'M NOT POSITIVE IF YOU CAN USE, IF YOU'RE

CHEMICALLY SENSITIVE. YOU CAN ALWAYS CALL OR EMAIL THE COMPANY (WWW.PERGO.COM)

& THEY MAY BE ABLE TO TELL YOU....BUT I CAN'T....SORRY.

TAKE CARE,

VICTORIA
