Guest guest
never knew I was chemically sensitive,or what environmental illness could do to a person, until this incident! 7 months ago,I was in my apartment typing at the computer when I smelled strong paint fumes.I realized that they were preparing the apartment directly under neath me.The last tennent had moved out and they were painting, replacing the carpeting and fumigating it. I didn't think it was a big deal,so I continued what I was doing Within 30 minutes I started to feel very lightheaded, and I thought maybe I was just tired so i picked up the phone, thinking to call my mom. I started to feel very drowsy,I closed the windows to try to air out some of the heavy fumes, which now smelled like paint combined with some other chemical. I turned on the air conditioner hoping it would filter some of the smell. And called my mom... 10 minutes into the conversation,I mentioned to my mother I felt very weird, and nausiated. My mom told me to go eat, thinking it was a drop in my blood sugar... Then suddenly my heart started pounding, the room began to spin. And I experienced a feeling of pins and needles all through out my body,I felt like I was passing out,and a feeling of sheer panic struck me.My mom told me to call 911. I ran outside and started to breathe some fresh air,I started feeling a little better by the time the paramedics arrived. When they paramedics came my vital signs were okay,my Blood pressure was normal, and they asked if I had some mental illness...They inspected the apartment for fumes, but couldnt smell any, then they went downstairs and smelled them, they just told me to inform my landlord... Well I did inform my landlord, and he was out on vacation refused to answer any calls, and just told me to go to the hospital,he did nothing for me,and they have yet to listen.... The next day I asked them to please inform me,if they are going to spray or paint near by,and they just said there is no way of doing that since the guys dont have a set schedule!! i WAS SO ANGRY AND UPSET...But did not know what else to do so I left it. Well a couple months later I had another one of these attacks, and this time was hospitalized for 3 days, hooked to heart monitors and they found nothing.... they sent me home and 3 days later I ended up in the emergency room... to make it short,it turns out I was suffering from acute Vertigo, which they say is an inner ear infection. But I think it is chemical injury, after doing research on the net. I have never had vertigo,in my life, until this incident with the fumes! The maintence man told me they use spray latex paint! Do you think I could have possibly been chemically injured??? Chemical exposure is very toxic, many are direct neurotoxins, some are used for chemical warfare, so yes you are probably right about the exposure causing your symptoms, no matter what doctors tell you. Many are not informed. Latex paint makes me sick. It sounds like the fumigant was a biggie, though- they are for killing stuff, so they can't be good for you. It sounds like maybe you should move......unless they are done messing with apts where you live. Spraying stuff is way more toxic then using a paint brush, but I think everybody sprays since it is so much faster and cheaper. This is a great site, with much info in the files section. You can also do a google with MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity) and maybe there are some other groups for that. Hope you find some healthy ideas. I still am somewhat new to this chemical thing, too, although mine stems from mold exposure in the home, which I am still trying to deal with.
