Guest guest Posted March 1, 2004 Report Share Posted March 1, 2004 Now, Pak's health minister calls for a nuke-free world Islamabad | February 28, 2004 10:40:45 AM IST The international uproar over Pakistan's clandestine nuclear activities notwithstanding, Pakistan's Health Minister Nasir Khan has said that a nuclear-free world is imperative to ensure sustainable peace. Khan voiced this opinion while talking to a delegation of International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) here on Thursday. The Minister said that the health policy of the government has shifted from curative to preventive side but we are striving to provide appropriate medical care also. He said, the government has increased its Gross Domestic Product from one per cent to 1.7 per cent in the health budget, which will have positive effects on the country's healthcare system. Pakistan and India had agreed to exchange cardiac; polio eradication and HIV/AIDS control team between the two countries, he said. According to The Nation, the IPPNW president, Dr. McCoy, informed Khan that his team was on a world tour that included visits to India and Pakistan to reduce the use of nuclear weapons and utilize the budget set aside for nuclear weapons on social welfare projects. Dr. Tipu Sultan, the Vice President of IPPNW, South Asia, also informed Khan about the activities of the organisation. They appreciated the steps taken by Pakistan to eliminate the possibility of nuclear proliferation.
