Guest guest
....Is it necessary to take calcium/mag/vitamin K and other bone building supplements when taking vitamin D? Or to put it another way, is it SAFE to take higher doses of vitamin D WITHOUT getting enough calcium/mag/vitamin k (and other minerals) in the diet or through supplementation? It seems like whenever I take vitamin D -- even when low, I tend to develop tiny bone spurs, and my teeth tend to get looser, rather than tighten, suggesting perhaps that vitamin d is pulling calcium from my bones/jaw/teeth. Plus, my tinnitus tends to worsen. even to " pulse " at times. Would appreciate your feedback and others comments as well. Here's a study that suggests vitamin K is critical to preventing vitamin D induced arterial calcification. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11410932?dopt=Abstract THANKS, Dan
Guest guest
Dan - The study you refer to is talking about the active form of vitamin D, 1,25(OH)2D. If you take supplemental vitamin D, that will increase the levels of the inactive form of vitamin D, 25(OH)D, but will not usually change your circulating levels of 1,25(OH)2D. Circulating 1,25(OH)2D production is controlled by other factors, with the main one being calcium. So yes, according to present medical literature studies, taking high doses of vitamin D is normally safe, without taking other minerals. However, according to studies, it is much more effective to take both vitamin D and calcium together, not just for bone health, but also for prevention of certain cancers, particularly colon cancer. You might want to consider getting your 1,25(OH)2D and/or PTH levels tested, if you want to find out whether you should be taking more calcium or not. - Mark > > ...Is it necessary to take calcium/mag/vitamin K and other bone building supplements > when taking vitamin D? > > Or to put it another way, is it SAFE to take higher doses of vitamin D WITHOUT > getting enough calcium/mag/vitamin k (and other minerals) in the diet or through > supplementation? > > It seems like whenever I take vitamin D -- even when low, I tend to develop tiny > bone spurs, and my teeth tend to get looser, rather than tighten, suggesting perhaps that > vitamin d is pulling calcium from my bones/jaw/teeth. Guest guest
Thanks Mark. I haven't had my 1-25d levels tested, but did have the PTH -- parathyroid - - test done, and that came out fine. When it comes to calcium, I'm going to keep trying, but it seems like when I take it (I've tried many different forms, with and without magnesium) it seems to make this muscle twitching that I get off and on worse. I wonder if that's due to worn out adrenal function, resulting in poor control of the electrolytes??? I'll keep trying...and will try to get more vitamin K too. I have a feeling my gut isn't producing much, as I've had recurrent yeast problems for years. Many thanks Mark. Would love to hear from others too, regarding vitamin D and calcification issues. Guest guest
Hey Dan, I was a dietitian working for the state before I got sick. Vitamin D levels are generally low in people with CFS for some reason. mine was 28, normal levels are something like 25-70. Vitamin K is produced in the gut by friendly bacteria, hence you would probably be better off eating a variety of different yogurts, as they all use different strains of probiotics. I take take the Dannon immunitas, Yakult, and others, mix them up always. Sure they contain some sugar, but the probiotics need it to flourish. Probiotics in powdered pill form are of little benefit since they contain no " live " probacteria. Ive seen some liquid forms, those are probably good. I have the muscle twiching too, I havent been able to figure it out yet, except that I think that its due to poor blow flow to the muscle and/or nerves.....
