Now this opens up a whole new can of worms. Why should a non-metabolisable

sugar alcohol (xylitol) enhance the absorption of anything? The earliest

paper I could access shows no real explanation but does show that the

bioavailability of calcium in a calcium carbonate /xylitol mix is as good

or better than a number of other common supplements. See

http://jn.nutrition.org/cgi/reprint/124/6/874.pdf .

However, the real off the beaten track stuff is within the patent docs

themselves,

See http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6224917.html for

Feed Supplement of Calcium, xylitol and ascorbic acid.

There are several more patents linked as references to this particular one,

these show a developmental process from the more basic ideas. The

implications for diet are phenomenal in my opinion.

There is much reading in this group which may be of great value

Xylitol makes me very sick.  I suspect it somehow increases the permability

(MSP) of the lining of the small intestine.  This is just a guess on my part.  I

try to avoid it.

[MODERATOR: Alice may have identified the mechanism:

" Particulate sucrose, xylitol, and erythritol fillers increase PMMA permeability

and elution kinetics " PMID: 17549030

" Glucuronic acid is further metabolized to xylitol via the glucuronate-xylulose

pathway...Although accumulation of polyols such as xylitol and sorbitol is

associated with myo-inositol depletion in diabetic complications, no causal

relationship has been established....xylitol, one of the products of MI

catabolism via the glucuronate-xylulose pathway, induces an overexpression of

MIOX. "
