Hi Shan,

Thanks for sharing this info. I've taken magnesium glycinate before

but not in the high amounts that you named. Please let me know what

brand you used. Did you order it online? I want to order the same

thing since it worked so well for you.

I like this particalar product as it does not contain any

fillers/additives. It has been my experiance that supplements are more

effective when they do not contain stearates which are trans fats. [

such as magnesium stearate which is a stearate despite that they

combine a bit of magnesium in it.} I feel it is also good/important to

avoid trans fats & especially since I take at least 9 capsules daily.

Maybe just one or even 2 pills a day with a trans fat in it would not

be so bad, but even a little here and there does add up. Unfortureately

the manufacturers not only use the trans fat on the machinery but

evidently put it on the ingrediants also.

Additives

Nearly all supplements contain stearates, manufacturing agents used as

lubricants to speed up production. Most capsules and tablets are made

by " jobbers " in mass production plants, which churn out a multitude of

formulas for various companies. Magnesium stearate and stearic acid are

lubricants added to raw materials in supplements so that production

machinery will run at maximum speeds. This ensures that production

schedules will meet profit targets.

Tablets also contain potentially allergenic binders, fillers and often

colouring agents. They are coated with shellac (listed in the

ingredients as " natural glaze " ) or vegetable coating (derived from

corn, to which many people are sensitive). Potentially allergenic

fillers are used to top off capsules.

These additives have a number of effects, including decreased

absorption. In a study published in Pharmaceutical Technology, the

percent dissolution for capsules after 20 minutes in solution went from

90 percent without stearates to 25 percent with stearates. These

substances clearly affect the dissolution and rapid absorption of

nutrients. Another problem is allergenic reaction, for even small

amounts of additives may cause reactions in sensitive individuals.

Fillers may contain hidden lactose or other allergenic ingredients.

This is a major reason why so many people have adverse reactions to

supplements, or fail to receive the significant benefits pure

supplements will offer. For these reasons, I recommend that, when

possible, people use additive-free supplements.

Because the supplement industry routinely uses additives in their

products, manufacturers and distributors always deny that the presence

of these substances is in any way detrimental. Nevertheless, it seems

to me a simple matter of common sense that the most desirable products

would not contain non-nutrient substances that are added solely to

expedite the manufacturing process.

The only widely available supplements free of additives are those made

by Thorne Research; they are available only through licensed health

care professionals and in some pharmacies. My own company, Dr. Ron's

Ultra-Pure, makes fifteen 100-percent pure, additive-free supplements.

I personally use and recommend Thorne products, my own, and those of a

number of small companies making additive-free specialty products.

Beware of Additives in Supplements

Stearates – Hydrogenated Fats Used in the Production of Most

Supplements– Decrease Absorption and May Be Toxic and Immunosuppressive

by Ron Schmid, N.D., ©2003 Magnesium stearate, stearic acid and

ascorbyl palmitate, made by hydrogenating cottonseed or palm oil, are

used throughout the supplements industry as lubricants. They are added

to the raw materials in supplements so that production machinery will

run at maximum speeds. These fatty substances coat every particle of

the nutrients, so the particles will flow rapidly.

The products this pharmacy makes are very good. My Environmental

doctor uses them a lot. Whereas they make and sell quality products,

theyu are not cheap. The magnesium glycinate I get is $62.00 Canadian,

for 300 capsules. Each capsule is 600 mg of magnesium glycinate, with

120mg of Elemental magnesium. I understand that the better quality

products say how much elemental magnesium is in the product. As I take

at least 9 capsules a day, this last me just a very little more then a

month. I also use transdermal magnesium everday on my feet and hands

though -mostly my feet still, I haven't needed it on my hands in over a

year.

Actually Jan, it is very true that magnesium has made signifant

changes in my life. I was diagnoses as an epileptic as a child. In

those days inforation about epilepsy was very poor and my parents were

told that the seizures would cause me to become mentally retarded. I

did not believe the doctors for I did not think I was mentally

retarded, so when I finished school, I trained as an EEG

[Electroencephalograph ] technician to learn how to live my life with

epilepsy. I had 2 different kinds of seizures so had to take anti-

convulsants everyday. And of course when I got ME, I had still more

seizures. However, Dr Mark Sircus told me about magnesiumk over 4 years

ago, and I started using trandermal magnesium chloride everyday. This

caused me to get the feeling back in my feet - ME seems to effect the

circulation. And got my hands under control. About 2 years ago, I also

started taken the magnesium glycinate and now I have stopped takeing

anti-convulsants since September of 2007. I have not had any seizures

since stopping the drugs either. I am extremely pleased, needless to

say. And grateful to Mark Sircus. My Environmental doctor now also uses

Dr Sircus's transdermal magnesium therapy in her practise with some of

her other patients too, especially for those with circulation problems

as I had. I was so scared as I had read that people had to have their

feet amputated, and take pain killers. I have MCS and drugs are

chemicals and I react badly to chemicals.

Good luck with your issues.

I'm with you on the magnesium, Shan! Years ago I became so impressed with the

research that I made sure I was getting 'enough' every day.

After some time, I had a hair analyis done and the mg was almost off the chart.

I had really messed up my mineral balance, and I was taking CA and Vit D, etc.

Now, even a small amount of mg acts like a laxative---something I do not need. I

use either the orotate or glycinate form when I take it.

I'm planning on using the topical form instead, just to see if I still get

benefit without the side effect.

According to Dr Mark Sircus that is the problem with many oral

magnesium products -they act as a laxative. Well there are other

problems too though with taking it orally. I tried 7 different kinds of

magnesium before I tried the mag glycinate. I even tried one that had 4

different kinds of magnesium in it.But they all did zilch. When I take

hte mag glycinate, I can tell the differene within an hour.

Anyways, Dr Mark Sircus did alot of research to find out how to give

magnesium efficiently and found that transderamal was most effective,

plus cost-effective, and practical. He was also looking for a product

that was pure as his patients are mostly those with autism and they

were not keen on putting more chemicals into their bodies......Some of

the transdermal products out there have a lot of mercury in them, like

the ones taken from the Salt Lake, etc. Others that are harvested from

he land, have more chemicals from the processing.

Mark put up a website for transdermal magnesium at

www.magnesiumforlife.com/ The titles running along near the top of the

pages are drop-down menus. You will find product info there. Mark

endorses a very pure product with a relatively high % of magnesium

chloride in it. I think it is 32 - 36%. It is easy to put 2 to 6 ounces

in a bath each night - and great for relaxing the muscels etc from a

long day, Great for a good night sleep too. I sometimes use it now in

just a foot bath too instead of the bath -depends on time usually. I

also sometimes just rub or spray it on my lower legs and feet and rub

it in and let it dry for 25 minutes. One can get their magnesium levels

up using just the trandermal - I just had a lot of issues and was very

deficiient.

Good luck.
