Guest guest
Hi all two nights ago i started having pain on my right shoulder. Pain was so much that i was not being able to lay on it and it kept me awake whole night. In the morning i was not being able to change my cloths. No possibility to move it upside down or side ways. Visited a doctor. he told me it was muscle spasm. By the way,my RF came out to be 88 (limits 0-14) and ESR was 35 in an hour (limits : less than 20). aso,wbc and crp fine. He gave me shot of mucopril and Voltaren also gave me some muscle relaxants, anti inflammatories.Started using these last night but i started having stomach problems and today i am feeling not good. Extreme exhaustion, flu like symptoms, feeling toxic. It could be that these medication are effecting HPA axis and are also toxic for me. Strange that i also have trigger thumb on the same arm since three months. So,apparently there is some inflammation there. My shoulder is hot and painful when i touch it.I wish to know what caused this. Only change of my supplements was increasing my calcium intake due to osteoporosis and also adding quercetin.Could it be that low magnesium triggered this muscle spasm? I just noticed yesterday that i also have eczema starting at my hand.Could it be that quercetin creating problems? I need to find something natural to overcome this problem. I just won't be able to use this medication. Some agents that will relax muscles and act as anti inflammatory. Are there any thoughts on this? any special diet needed? should i take omega 3 or evening primrose? I have some bromelain and am taking it together with quercetin. thanks. nil
Guest guest
I have had exactly the same experience - in both shoulders and several other areas - at different times. MRI's have shown calcium deposits in the bursa and tendons in the shoulders ( never MRIed the other areas) My MD says it just takes one wrong motion of the muscle and the calcium deposits in and around it irritate the muscle and it seizes up to protect itself. My ND thinks it is improper calcium metabolism as a result of all that is out of whack in my digestion/metabolism/etc. We are working on a long-term solution but in the short-term, once the searing pain settles down in a flare-up I do lots of physio exercises every day to keep everything flowing as smoothly as possible. I know the pain you are feeling and how disabling it is - best of luck with it and if you want more info about what my ND and I are doing long term, just pm me. in Calgary > > Hi all > > two nights ago i started having pain on my right shoulder. Guest guest
I started having facial tics, muscle spasms, what feels like shaking leg syndrome and sharp pains in my back, shoulders legs and arms last spring. I tried a number of strategies to address it. The one that makes the most difference is something I found in our archives-- taking high doses of malic acid. I take 1,200 mg three times a day. It is very inexpensive. I get it at the following link: http://www.swansonvitamins.com/SW939/ItemDetail?n=4294967187 From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Nil-Happy Holidays Sent: Friday, December 19, 2008 5:01 AM Subject: arm problem Hi all two nights ago i started having pain on my right shoulder. Guest guest
Hi, Tracey. I'm curious as to whether magnesium is something you tried. Sometimes magnesium deficiency can cause some of these things, and people with CFS tend to be low in magnesium. Guest guest
Yes, I take 1000 mg of magnesium daily and I think 500 mg of calcium. But those symptoms showed up while I was taking the magnesium and had been doing so for a while. Those symptoms where almost entirely gone after a few weeks of taking the malic acid. A few weeks ago, I started a Chinese medicine protocol for my hypothyroid symptoms too quickly and started herxing, as a result I was not taking my supplements and after a week of not taking it, the aches and pains start to return. A week back on it and those symptoms are starting to recede. I take a lot of stuff, but I added the Malic Acid slowly. I'm pretty sure it is a combination of the malic acid and the magnesium working together from what I read a while back. I will try to find my source. When I am on this, I have almost no symptoms. groups search is not working right now, but I found the malic acid option in our archives. Additional research revealed that others are using it successfully. It also seems to work for my family members with simple muscle pulls From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of rvankonynen Sent: Friday, December 19, 2008 2:16 PM Subject: Re: arm problem Hi, Tracey. Guest guest
Hi - It's possible that that the malic acid is helping to increase magnesium retention, as taking certain acids will increase urinary ph, and increased urinary ph is known to decrease urinary magnesium excretion. - Mark > > > > I started having facial tics, muscle spasms, what feels like > shaking leg > > syndrome and sharp pains in my back, shoulders legs and arms last > spring. > > I tried a number of strategies to address it. Guest guest
{Moderator: Trimmed post. } You are most likely right as I remember it was essential that you take them together. The following are some articles I found on them. Magnesium & Malic Acid Supplementation Often Beneficial for CFS & FM Quality-of-Life Measures - Studies and Top Specialists Report www.prohealth.com/track.cfm?id=6228 " While magnesium helps activate production of ATP, malic acid allows the body to make the ATP more efficiently, even under low oxygen, or " hypoxic " conditions. " Malic Acid Reduces Muscle Pain While Increasing Endurance in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia <http://www.prohealth.com/library/showarticle.cfm?id=1423 & t=CFIDS_FM> http://www.prohealth.com/library/showarticle.cfm?id=1423 & t=CFIDS_FM Leading health care professionals familiar with CFS are continuing to recommend malic acid for the chronic muscle soreness and fatigue experienced by most patients. They have found that patients using a combination of malic acid and magnesium hydroxide report improvements with reduction of muscle pain and tiredness. Guest guest
Yes. As I said before, since taking malic acid with magnesium, I do not experience either. Mark suggested that my taking malic acid with magnesium might be causing me to retain magnesium more effectively. The bottomline is that when I regularly take malic acid I experience no tics or restless leg and minimal aches and pains Magnesium Malate is a form of magnesium combined with malic acid that I read that some with cfs/fm take with success. I have not tried that form of magnesium yet From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Marc and Sara Sent: Saturday, December 20, 2008 7:34 AM Subject: Re: arm problem Referring to the facial tic's and restless leg--------------I have been suffering with a drastic eye twitch/spasm for several months. Guest guest
Hi, Sara. Magnesium deficiency might be the cause. This has been reported in the medical literature. Guest guest
Hi, Mark. I think you are very likely correct about this! I've always wondered why the magnesium malate combination was found to be helpful, and the explanations that were offered didn't seem very convincing. I think you've figured it out! If this is what is going on, then magnesium citrate should work the same way, because citrate is metabolized also, just as malate is, leaving behind the magnesium, and that will tend to drive up the urine pH. I think that there is a problem in CFS with retaining magnesium inside the cells, and I think that it is due to glutathione depletion, as has been found to be the case for red blood cells when their glutathione is intentionally lowered, but the mechanism you've suggested should help to hold the magnesium concentration in the blood plasma a little higher, and that in turn should help to hold the intracellular level of magnesium a little higher, because the ion pumps would not have to work against as large a gradient in concentration to do so. I've been wondering about magnesium malate for a long time. Thanks! Guest guest
Rich - Regarding glutathione and magnesium, I've been meaning to ask you what you think about Kurup's studies regarding the isoprenoid pathway in the hypothalamus, and how it affects glutathione and magnesium levels. He's published a study claiming that this pathway is dysfunctional in CFS: http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/118844336/abstract?CRETRY=1 & S\ RETRY=0 <http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/118844336/abstract?CRETRY=1 & \ SRETRY=0> He's also found similar dysfunctions in other diseases such as autism and sarcoidosis: http://lib.bioinfo.pl/auth:Kurup,RK <http://lib.bioinfo.pl/auth:Kurup,RK> However, I can't find anyone who has commented at all on the results of these studies or his theories, even though the articles have all been published in reputable journals. He's also published a book, but I don't have access to that. Seeing the sarcoidosis study really got my attention, considering the MP protocol, and the fact that many people with sarcoidosis do experience fatigue, even after the sarcoidosis has supposedly been resloved. Have you ever found anyone who has commented on Kurup's work at all? Is his work meaningful in anyway, or simply an interesting observation that doesn't necessarily lead to anything? I.e., in none of the studies that I've read, has there been any proposed treatment based on what the studies showed. Thanks. - Mark

Guest guest
> > Is there a magnesium/calcium patch for people the have poor GI function? Hi Al, I use a magnesium sulfate cream/oil that I make myself. I have several recipes. Basically, epsom salts dissolved in water then oil. Spritz on or just rub in. Can make as oily or creamy as you wish... 3 tablespoons water + 4 tablespoons salts + 12 tablespoon coconut oil - dissolve epsom salt in water then add oil. Use after bath or shower to really sink into open pores. This may not be helpful if you cannot handle sulfur, but if you can, it is already in best form, sulfate. Or you can puchase Kirkmans' Lotion ($18 for 4 ounces), or one that is a bit more work but is really creamy: from an autism parents website: 1 cup Epsom salts 2 t non-aluminum baking soda 1/2 cup boiling distilled water 2 T glycerin 1oz Pure Vit E oil (1/4 cup almond, olive, or sunflower oil ) ¾ cup Vit E lotion with Cocoa butter (1/2 cup favorite natural lotion or cream from HFS OR 1/2 cup coconut butter ) optional 10 drops of Thieves (a few drops lavender or other essential oils ) a T flaxseed oil a T evening primrose oil a T of MSM powder to boost sulfate levels Boil water, add Epsom salts and baking soda. Turn off heat. Add ingredients, stir. Pour into blender and emulsify. Makes 2 cups Pour into wide mouth mason jar, cap, shake and place in refrigerator.
