Guest guest
Hi a, I was on steriods for six months and they really helped. I gained weight and got a real attitude with everyone around me. He took me off the steriods after six months because he thought I might get diabetes or some other problem. They can work miracles, but they are only covering up the problem, and you can't take them forever because of the side effects. My doctor believes if I use them a for a little while a couple of times a year when I am real bad it will be OK. I guess anything that helps us is bad for us so we have to make some tuff decisions on medications. I should say our Doctors have to make some tuff decisions but my doctor is good about giving me the facts and letting me to decide. He asked me if I wanted to try Methotrexate, and I said he was the doctor, and he said " it is your body and you need to make the decision " . Back to the steriods, they are the only thing that can save your life in some cases, but they come at a price. I just had to listen to my doctor and trust him, but he likes to give the decisions back to me unless he is sure there is the only way for me to go. Good luck, > Hi, > I am still in a lot of pain. i toss an turn all night because my > shoulders, hips knees and back hurt. Guest guest
a R, I've been on prednisone on a daily basis for about 4 1/2 years now. For the first 2 or so years I took 10 mg daily. One day I just deceided that I didn't want to take 10 mg any more. I took one 5 mg in the am and 1 5 mg in pm, so I just stopped my pm pill (DON'T EVER DO THIS). At the time I didn't realize what a stupid thing I was doing. It is a love/hate med. I know that most likely I will take this drug for the rest of my life. I've accepted that and have no problem with it. It does have side affects and I've had several of them, the current one being heel spurs. I also had cataracts in both eyes at age 41. My eye doc says because of the kind they were there is no doubt they were from the prednisone. They appeared within a year, out of the blue. I've had both of them removed and can see great. Don't even need my glasses most of the time. I can't really say about gaining weight, as I was dx'd right after the birth of my son, so I still have my baby weight I never lost. However, I have lost weight recently 9 1/2 pounds in 2 weeks and I'm still taking my daily dose of 5 mg, so you can loose weight on prednisone. I've also had cortisone shots injected into joints and an IM shot in my arm. They help sometimes, sometimes they don't. The longest I remember a shot lasting is in my wrists for about 4 months. I've also taken Mederol dose packs. Where you take x number of tablets one day, then one less the next til your finished. I used to always take these when we were going to Disney. Only you can make the decision. Good luck to you. Tery
Guest guest
a R, You have suffered for a long time now without any relief for your pain. Before starting steroids, I would seek another opinion. You never know, another doctor may have other ideas to help make you comfortable. Guest guest
, I am going to see my internist next thursday(so my hubby can go) and will have a long discussion on what my options are. I am considering asking him to refer me to a rhuematologist, but i am a bit weary about that. I like him and dont want to hurt his feelings silly thought isnt it. another question, my right leg is very swallon. it starts at the knee and radiates down the calf and up the thigh. What is causing this? I am not on my feet all day, I have a desk job. How can i illiminate the swelling? I have taken 2 short walks(off 2 short docks hehe only kidding ) hoping to help it, but it hasnt. any suggestions. a R > a R, > > You have suffered for a long time now without any relief for your pain. > Before starting steroids, I would seek another opinion. Guest guest
a R. I've stayed away from steroids because of the side effects. I've had joint injections of steroids, but I've refused to take oral steroids. I would rather take pain meds than steroids. Maybe your doctor was suggesting cortisone joint injections. They give me months of relief most of the time. Have you ever tried cortisone injections? If not, it may be worth a try. Oral prednisone is NOT the only option. Do you have a pain clinic near you? They specialize in the type of pain we suffer from and have many alternatives that are safer than steroids. If you've exhausted all other choices, steroids may be the only answer, but I hope you can find another way. a [ ] steroids Hi, I am still in a lot of pain. i toss an turn all night because my shoulders, hips knees and back hurt. Guest guest
a R, Even though you like your internist, I would ask him for a referral to a rheumatologist. Any good doctor will realize that two minds thinking about your case are better than one, especially if you have been suffering so. And a rheumatologist specializes in cases like yours. It doesn't guarantee that he or she is automatically going to be more able to help you, but the odds are better that you will get a better answer if you go to see a rheumy. To put it bluntly: your long-term health is much more important than your internist's feelings. You are not being silly, just kind. Don't sacrifice yourself though. I think this doctor has let you live in pain too long. That alone is a reason to see what someone else has to say about your situation. I'm not sure about your knee, but a rheumatologist could best assess what is causing the swelling in your knee and the pain in your hand and decide what to do about it. Good luck! Please let us know how your appointment goes. Maybe with your husband there, you will have the courage to ask for a referral. Guest guest
a R, I'm not , but thought I'd but in here. I have a crate at work that I got at a discount store for about $2.00 or $3.00, the kind you use to store stuff in like kids toys, etc. I turned it upside down and put a pillow on it and I keep my feet up most of the day. Just a thought. Tery " a R " <mquiltn@...> wrote: >, >I am going to see my internist next thursday(so my hubby can go) and >will have a long discussion on what my options are. Guest guest
Hi sweety I personally have chosen not to use prednisone, but I have another condition that causes pain that the prednisone won't help. I take something to help me sleep. Perhaps that may be an option for you if you do not want to take the steroids. I certainly know what the hip, back and shoulder is like! It is very hard to get comfortable if you like to sleep on your side. I have started laying flat on my back. If my lower back or knees are bothering me I prop a pillow under my knees. That releaves the pressure on the lower back and knees for me. Gentle Hugs, > Hi, > I am still in a lot of pain. i toss an turn all night because my > shoulders, hips knees and back hurt. Guest guest
About steroid use, what if it's not practical to " get out of the house " and we have to still live here? My 8yo son is also now coughing a lot, starting him back on his inhalers (Q-Var steroid for maintenance and a Salbutamol as a bronchiodilator). Are there alternatives to these medicines to stop his coughing and a return of his asthma? I'm working on getting a dehumidifier, and improving our nutrition (no more refined foods, whole foods, Nourishing Traditions approach to nutrition), giving him yogurt, vitamin C, echinacea, fish oil tablets. Any other ideas to support his/our immune system? Advice? Thanks.
