Guest guest
Hi Barb, Let me introduce myself, (like an AAA meeting), my name is Dan Dunkin, and I'm a non believer..... Or should I say until just recently. We have lived with mold in our home for a while now, and during this past winter we were all sick. The problem was found in our bedroom, mold in the bed and in the wall, and also, IN THE CARPET. Recently we had the " Mold Guy " from the local health department come out and look at the house. What I learned from him was just the beginning.... first thing he said, carpet has to go. Carpets not only act as sponges and create a terrarium effect, but they trap allergans also, and shampooing will not get them out and vaccuuming stirs them up. If the bedroom is on the bottom floor of the house, by all means, leave the carpet out. You want a soft walk, wear slippers or socks. I look forward to the day we have no carpet, and a dry house. My sensitivity to molds is very mild, I live in the same house with everyone else, and while my family gets sick, I've been standing around saying it must be hay fever or something. Yesterday my son spent an hour in his room cleaning it, and he has been coughing for nearly 24 hours now, and he is sick again. I've been a hard sell, but I'm sold... Get rid of the carpet, they are dirty, filthy, everything you step on outside gets put into the carpet, (think about that one a while), they collect dust mites and dead skins, pollins, the list goes on, and you can't throw it in the wash machine. ALTERNATIVE: remove the carpet, you want soft... For a cheaper price than carpeting you can buy huge throw's, you can wash them, they are cheaper and easier to replace, and they look nice. Has anyone done any research on good carpeting for issues we discuss. I would imagine that some of the carpets that are easily washed would be good. I remember posts about padding but not about carpeting. Anyone done the work on this topic yet?? I will be either pulling up carpet in bedroom and refinished hardwood floor underneath or putting down new carpet. Guest guest
In my heart I know you are right. I'm not a fan of carpeting anyway but I'm a light sleeper and the thought of everyone's foot steps resounding through sleep area is a turn off. I guess it could be a required courtesy to wear soft slippers after hours. Guest guest
2 winters ago, before I knew about the mold thing, I had an asthma attack every time I went into my bedroom. Carpet was in good shape, not anything I should have been allergic to specifically. I had it taken out- instant relief!!!! No more asthma. There were tons of carpet beetles living in it. I am allegic to bugs in my living envirn. Also the dust mites, mold, pollen, etc. I even did the cleaning of the floor after the carpet was out. We have not refinished, just cleaned very well. I can't tolerate the chemicals or dust of refinishing....it is not the most beautiful, but it is to me, clealiness it next to Godliness, they say.
