The 144-year-old Pike County Jail, believed to be the oldest active

jail in Ohio, is closing next month because of black mold

contamination.

Sheriff Larry says the mold was found in the 9-1-1 center at

the beginning of the year. The center is being moved to the building

that houses the sheriff's administrative offices. \

Air filters have been installed while the move progresses. The 12-

bed jail was changed last year from an overnight facility to a 12-

hour holding site because its age prevented officials from obtaining

sufficient insurance coverage.

Most prisoners are held in other area jails. has proposed

building a one-point-three million-dollar, 48-bed jail. If approved

by county commissioners, it could be completed next year.
