Guest guest
June 4 we had a contractor and his roofer install new skylight in master bathroom, extra turbos and other ventilation on the roof plus fix a roof leak in the hall. When they replaced the skylight I asked if they saw any water damage or mold and they both said no. We've had rain almost every day for a month, last week I noticed water spots on the ceiling under the new skylight and soon water was dripping down. Rain was heavy so I thought I would check the attic. I found 4 other leaks where the roofer had installed the turbo and air hawks. I phoned the roofer, he came out Monday, we both went up on the roof and he determined that he hadn't sealed the new skylight nor the extra ventilation. He did that and said he would be back next day to start repairs on the damaged sheetrock. He didn't show. Thursday we had major rain again, I checked the attic and found water dripping through the roof plywood. Again phoned roofer and he told me he couldn't come until today. Knowing what I do about moisture and mold, decided (serious mistake) to open some of the damaged sheetrock myself. The sheetrock was wet, the paper was moldy and the wood studs have mold growing on them. I began to react and covered it up. Called roofer and he said he would make the repairs. Meantime I had taken a few pictures, emailed to my husband who phoned the contractor. Contractor said he's busy but would have roofer inspect the damage and report to him. This morning I phoned the roofer to find out what time he's coming. He said he would bring some new sheetrock to repair the damage. I informed him of the mold again and that much more needed to be removed and the mold remediated before he could close up the opening. He quickly said he's not doing that and then informed me that the mold and damage must have been from the old skylight rather than the new skylight leaking. He's wrong because he and the contractor inspected the area and said no water damage interior, I had no water stains in the bathroom. He's trying to get out of his responsibility. What is my recourse? 5 weeks of rain will cause mold to grow. I'm also concerned about the attic with the water leaks for 5 weeks before I noticed them.
